Capital gains tax -- Pay when?

I’ll admit to being bad at research. I tried to find this on the web, and the problem is way too much information, not way too little.

It seems a lot of people want my money, for some reason. :dubious:

But this is a quicky: I just sold some stock, and I’m getting a check for the results of the sale. Do I have to pay the capital gains tax before the end of the quarter, or just when I complete my annual tax form?

If it’s the end of the quarter, I better bust a move. That’s just a few days away.

I believe you don’t have to pay until you file your return but if you will be paying a significant amount the government will tack on a fee for having too lottle withheld during the year so it may be a good idea to pay some/all of it now anyway.

(we had this happen just this year to us although with the change in capital gains laws for this year in the new tax plan… you may luck out!)
