Capturing stills from a DVD

Is there any way to grab a still frame from a DVD on a computer? I’m running InterWin WinDVD, and I tried using a screen capture utility, but all I got was a black screen. Perhaps the DVD player uses a different video sub-assembly? Anyway, I’m open to any and all suggestions. FTR, there are no copyright issues in my case, as I have full permission of the content owner to do this.

The ghetto method should work, I’ve done it before. Stretch the screen but don’t maximize it, pause the video, then hit “Print Screen” on your keyboard. (it should be above “insert” and “home”)

Open any graphic program and go to “edit” then "paste’.

You’ll have to do some cropping, but like I said this was the ghetto method.

Pick up the free version of Zoom Player, and be sure to enable the VMR9 renderer. That should let you get the screenshots you need.

You can get Zoom Player at http://www.inmatrix.com/zplayer/

It’s easier than ‘ghetto.’ It’s so easy, there’s a button on the WinDVD menu to do this. Look for a button with a camera - if your copy of WinDVD is like mine, it’s under the time elapsed. Hovering my mouse over this button gives the tool-tip “Capture §”. Try hitting P while playing or paused. To tell WinDVD where to save the capture images, click the “SubPanel” arrow/button next to the InterVideo trademark on the left side of the control window, then click the wrench icon, go to the Control tab, and enter the desired directory for “Capture Directory.”

Accelerated video usually uses something called an “overlay” which doesn’t use screen memory the same way and won’t show up on in a screen cap. You should be able to configure the video so that it doesn’t use accelerated hardware, and be able to capture the image normally.

Substitute “left side of the control window” with “right side of the control window.”
