Car bomb explodes outside Palm Springs, CA fertility clinic, killing the car's occupant [17-May-2025]

The local CBS station did an interview with the bomber’s estranged father.

Barktus also said that when his son was nine years old, he accidentally burned their family home down while trying a trick with matches but never noticed any red flags.

“He would make a smoke bomb, stink bomb, kid things,” his father said. “He didn’t make anything dangerous. When I say bombs, it wasn’t like a bomb bomb. … It was like something you just throw on the ground and it pops.”

Nope, no red flags there!

For a terrorist attack, this is getting very little media attention. I saw a reference to it on Blue Sky, and then this thread with a couple of links.

With a side of incel?

“The suspect was reportedly dealing with depression and had personal relationship issues, law enforcement officials close to the investigation said.”

Being a young man with depression hardly makes him an Incel.

Doesn’t fit the narrative. Terrorist attacks mostly get attention if they fit into a larger story, and especially if they can be used politically.

Coupled with “relationship issues” might.

I don’t know if anti-natalism itself is a left wing belief, but it certainly touches on some other left winged beliefs and there’s some overlap. For example, environmentalism is generally left wing, and some anti natalists want fewer humans because they think humans are uniquely damaging to the environment.

And some posts that are right on the cusp here

They know who did it, and nobody else died. There are also no known accomplices.

Totally. If he were Muslim or an undocumented immigrant or something, I’m sure it would receive the same minimal coverage.

Or a right winger driving a Cybertruck.

Bombing while Brown / Black is always a hit with the news media.

The Exploding Cybertruck story was huge (well, for a few days, but that’s all any story lasts nowadays) and that guy was white.

Whereas it’s the exact opposite for mass shooters.

Seems like right-wing terrorists and Muslim terrorists both get a lot of attention, but left-wing or unclassifiable ones less so. Also, no one was killed except the terrorist himself. If he’d blown up a bunch of people it would be in the news regardless.

Can you name any black mass shooters who didn’t get a lot of attention?

It was a suicide with some property damage - at best, you could call it a failed terrorist attack. Those are hardly major news.

Like a lot of things these days you have to know where to look. This is getting a lot of traction on Right Wing social media (left wing terrorist). But now it’s being pushed aside by the Biden cancer story (they lied to us he’s been dying for years).

Sounds like a terrible place to look for stuff.

I would say it follows from a number of left-wing beliefs taken to their logical extreme. Similar to how if you really, truly believe that abortion is murder, then abortion clinics are filled with murderers, and then it’s a fairly short step to justify bombing one.

Most people don’t take their ideology to such an extreme, but there are always outliers.

I’d assume it was prominent because (a) there was excellent video from more than one angle and (b) it was a Cybertruck, with all the attendant associations, good and bad.

I’ve got an uncle who founded a seemingly antinatalist nonprofit in the 70s. He isn’t violent but rather makes speeches around the world about why people should stop having children.
The man and his wife are despondent that a proponent of such a cause would make a bomb.
