I’m a girl biker. I loves, LOVES being the one to tell a car ignorant man how to jump start his car.
I live in the middle of nowhere and ride in lonely places. I do go armed. When I’m on the side of the road, I am more trusting of bikers than guys in pick up trucks. The only time the police have stopped for me is when I’ve flagged them down.
Interesting logic. Approaching an occupied car is very risky and potentially very dangerous, yet any passing rapist, thug, motorcycle gang or thief will gladly do it. There seems to be an inconsistency here.
Not at all. Most/nearly all victims of violent crime are unarmed, therefore there is comparatively very little risk for the rapist, thug, motorcycle gang to approach the stranded motorist to commit a crime.
Moreover, even among the few armed citizens, most armed citizens sitting on the side of the road who were “intended” victims, will usually draw their gun, show their gun, and warn the attacker to go away - again, with no risk to the criminal.
A criminal approaching an intended victim sitting in a car, exposes himself to no more risk, no*** additional ***risk, than he otherwise would encounter anywhere he attacks someone in his normal day-to-day criminal activities. There is no “extra” risk for a criminal to attack a stranded motorist as opposed to attacking his victim somewhere else. Furthermore, attacking a stranded motorist in the middle of nowhere away from any possible witnesses away from any possible help is probably MUCH safer for the criminal than attacking a victim where others could come to aid.
Attacking a stranded unarmed motorist is probably the “safest” attack(for the criminal) that there is.
Furthermore, if a criminal pulls up behind you to attack you as a stranded motorist, any other potential good samaritan driving by will more than likely just keep on driving since they figure out that the stranded motorist probably already is being assisted. Almost nobody will stop to help if they see somebody else is already on the scene. Passing motorists will not be able to differentiate that it is actually a criminal who stopped behind you.
After reading further, it sounds like you should have shot the fucker after he changed your tire. He might have tried to shake your hand or something. You can’t be too careful these days!
Did you have the hood of the van up? That’s the international signal for “need road assistance” and people would be more likely to stop. I’ve stopped to help people many times. Last summer, I was driving home from my mom’s, who lives out in the middle of nowhere. I saw a car with the hood up, I stopped and gave the guy some water for the radiator. It wasn’t all that hot out, maybe 70 but it was a POS car. He said he’d been sitting there an hour, no one had stopped. He even offered me money for the jug of water he was so thankful. I pshawed the idea and said keep it.
Then again, a few weeks later I saw another car pulled off with the hazard lights on and hood up, the lady freaked out as I walked up to the car. You’d have thought I was carrying my murder-machete with me or something. It was broad daylight, lots of traffic and within the city limits so it’s not like she was out in the middle of nowhere. Anyways, she screamed through her rolled up window that help was on the way and insisted that I leave. No skin off my nose, I left.
In hindsight, you’re probably correct. That whole friendly citizen act was likely all a ruse to butter me up, so that I would let my guard down and trust him in the future. Any day now, he’s gonna make his move. When I die, it was him.
But I just wanted to add to the datum: My car has broken down a couple of times. The previous car but one had the distributor cap blow abruptly, and then the car just winds down. Thankfully I was able to pull over as it was in rush-hour traffic, and get on the side of the road.
I didn’t have a cell phone in those days so I walked to the next exit and called from a gas station.
When I got back to the car, I had a note from the HELP people on the highway - I didn’t know, but they drive every day on rush hour to help stranded motorists.
In the time I sat there I had another person stop to help me, and a cop pulled over too, and asked if I needed help. I told them help was coming.
I have never not had nice people stop. I wonder if the person in the OP was just sort of like, “I want to help this guy but I’m afraid he’ll think I’m weird or something” and ended up looking weird anyway.
Then again, knock on wood, I have never been stranded alone, at night, on a rural road. I might be freaked too.
That’s all you got? Two incidents over the last 4 months? According to Susanann, I would expected there to be at least two per day, everyday, in every city across the country.
I have stopped for many folks, and given rides to the next exit 2-3 times at least.
When my car has issues (even brand new cars can have issues), I put a sign in my window that states that I have already called AAA - saves everyone a minute or 3.
$500 is just the under the average price that I have paid for my vehicles. I have always had to do some work on them to get them into running (reliably) condition. I’ve had some vehicles for that price that have given me years of service, but I wouldn’t recommend getting one unless you don’t mind fixing things here and there.
