I am trying to research specs on the 2001 and 2003 Toyota Camry (various trims). Edmunds gives good info, but as I understand it, contradicts itself. I was hoping the SDope could help confirm this is an error, or otherwise explain what these specs mean.
At this link for the 2001 Camry, for example: As you scroll down, it shows the CE Trim with 4cyl 5M and 4cyl 4A. (I guess “5M” and “4A” is a specific engine identifier?) Anyway, if you scroll down, you will see these two Camry types shown to have V6 engines. Even further down, it says “inline 4”. What’s up with this? Is Edmunds going senile? Or, am I misunderstanding the data?
4A - Four Speed Automatic Transmission
5M - Five Speed Manual Transmission
Other than that, I don’t see what you are talking about. When I scroll down the page in your link, I get NHTSA crash test ratings, offers for Camrys for sale, consumers reviews, etc… I see no contradictions.
OK, odd as this seems, two webpages use the same full web address. My link apparently takes you to the first of the two web pages (ie: like a top layer, if you will). If you are seeing NHTSA crash data, please click the green button that says “See All Features and Specs”. A webpage slides out from the right side of the screen with more specs, starting with the basics (ie # of cylinders, etc.) Further down, you will see data claiming it’s a V6 and even further down, inline 4 [cylinders].
It also shows the 5M (5-speed manual) to be an automatic. It looks as if they have some corruption of their database. In the “Overview” it calls it a V6, but in the “Engine” section it calls it an Inline 4. The CE model is an inline 4. The XLE is the V6.
