I wanted to know if anyone has used a car dog harness that they are particularly happy with. I have heard good things about the Roadie by Ruff Rider, it is supposed to be the safest (the name is clearly the most homoerotic). In addition, anyone know of a shop in Seattle that might have a Roadie that I could look at/try out? I have called all over and have not been able to find anyone who stocks them. (I understand i am probably SOL here)
Here is a story which mentions several harnesses, including the Ruff Rider. I see plenty of them online, and the article mentions that Petco has significantly increased the number of canine restraints that their stores stock. Do you have a Petco near you?
Otherwise, it may be that you have to buy online from someone with a good return policy…
That article also gives good tips for acclimating the dog to the harness.
Good luck!
Thanks EJsGirl, I had caled Petco and they only had the ones that were rated as unsatisfactory by whatever random article I found that rated them…anyway looks like I am going to have to roll the online dice. Man this topic really brought the boys to the yard didn’t it?
Heh.
I actually can’t use harnesses- we have Newfoundlands and they won’t fit in any car seat! They go in the back cargo area of either vehicle, with a very strong dog guard between them and the back seat.
The dog guards are interesting- I had always thought that they were strictly for keeping the dog from jumping into the back seat. Then we got into giant breeds about ten years ago, and I was told that not only could the dog be seriously injured by flying forward in a collision, but that he could kill me too, and anyone else in the front seat! 170 pounds coming right at the back of your head…
It had never occurred to me. One more reason to never have an unrestrained animal in the car, aside from the more obvious ones…
You may still be able to use a harness, depending on a few factors. You would need a car/truck/SUV with attachment points in the rear area (my Soob has them). In addition, there would need to be a harness large enough. It looks like the Roadie only goes to 140 punds and 42" chest, but maybe someone makes a harness big enough.
