Car Dopers. Tire Question.

What is the widest tirewith a Z rating that will fit a standard 18" Chrysler 300 rim?

That’s it. Pretty simple.

Isn’t the width of the tire determined by the rim? You can change the aspect ratio, but not the width, IIRC. If that’s true, the 300 uses a 245mm tire width for it’s 18" rims.

According to the Chrysler website, the 17" and 18" wheels available on 2008 models use a 225/60 tire. Only the 20" takes a 245.

(What Santo said- you can’t use differening tire widths on a wheel.)

Guess I was wrong, according to this page, you can use up to 255s on the 18" OEM wheels:

It’s probably bad form to cite a forum, but I’ve found their sister site, www.chargerforumz, to have dependable advice, especially when it’s a forum sticky. In case any body else can use info, it applies to the LX platform, meaning the Charger is included on that page, also.

You’re quite right, apparently. Goodyear says you can increase section width by up to 3% without switching wheels.

(Although 225-255 is more than 3%)

Damn. That’s not much of all. I had–I believe–275 wide tires on 17" rims on my 2002 Mustang. So I will need new wheels as well as tires if I’m to get performance tires on my 300? I’m in the process of purchasing one now. I dont like the 20" tires. I loved the 17" on my mustang. 18 seems perfect. But I want some wide ones. Factory only offers 225s on the 2009. That’s it. I hate them.
