Car Insurance Dyslexic Number Plate Error

My partner was stopped by police yesterday who advised she was not insured. We pay by direct debit and have a certificate of insurance. On closer inspection two numbers in the number plate have been accidentally switched, the result of either the insurance clerk’s typo or my partner’s dyslexia (also the reason it wasn’t noticed earlier).

Where do we stand now? The police have given us a producer and we’ve spent 5 hours on unanswered hold to the insurance company!

Hmmm. You’re in the UK, so I’m guessing the police giving you a producer doesn’t mean you’re making a television show. Maybe that’s what we’d call a ticket or a summons…something saying you need to appear in Court?

I think the thing to do is contact the insurance company to have them correct the error, and possibly have them give you a letter stating that you are insured, and that you were insured at the time the ticket was issued, along with a new certificate showing the correct numbers. You may also want to talk to a UK lawyer to see where you stand. In my state, if you could get the documentation described above, the ticket would likely be dismissed. I dunno what might happen in the UK.

Correct your documents as indicated by Oakminster. In many locations in the US, that ticket would then become a “traveling without insurance documentation” which is a $5 fine, as opposed to “traveling without insurance” which costs a ton and brings all kinds of heartache.

I had a similar situation in Florida. I worked overnights and I went to work on August 31st and my plates expired on August 31st. So when I left work it was September 1st.

Then I got stopped and the cop said the plates were expired. I said "Sorry officer I didn’t get around to putting the sticker on. I have it in my glove box. So I showed him the sticker and he said "OK but I’m still gonna give you a ticket for driving with an expired plate.

Then he asked to see my insurance, and I showed him and then the cop checks my VIN number on the dash with the card. Well the last number on the insurance card was a 9 and the last number on the VIN was a 6. All the other numbers were the same, it was obviously a typo. Then I got a ticket for driving without insurance.

So I went and the insurance company corrected it and I brought the correct info and the sticker information with the purchase and the went to the county hall. The clerk looked at the info, dismissed the ticket (or whatever you call it) and charged me $5.00 admin costs.

The OP just has to go to a police station with the correct documentation within a certain time.
