Car rental question....urgent!

My brother that lived in an adjacent state just died. I have 3 vehicles but they are all 2-seaters but I need to take a dog and luggage…hence the need for a bigger vehicle.

Is it possible to rent a vehicle without knowing what day the rental car will returned.? I’m note sure how long I will be spending down there.

Thanks for any help!!!

Yes no problem at all. Just tell the agent the range in which it might be returned and they will tell you what the best option.

Are you planning to rent locally and drive there? Or are you flying there and renting? If the former you should get a reduced rate because you should not be paying hidden airport charges.

I’ve gone up to a week over on a rental (Enterprise)

I did call them when I realized I wouldn’t hit my return date.

It was a very small deal. They simply charged me the rate I was already getting for the number of days beyond my initial return estimate.

This was on a corporate account and with a large renter, though. Check any fine print before you rent. You might even try being honest and telling them you might need the car an extra week or two. If the charges change dramatically, just find a different renter.

Car rentals are charged by the hour, day and week (longer terms as well).
The most expensive option is to agree to a 24 hour rental, say, and then return the car late. Returning it late is no problem, but you’ll typically be charged a late fee per hour and then a per diem fee that might be a lot more than the original per diem fee.
Make your best guess and see if a weekly rate–often much cheaper–is the best option. It won’t make sense to rent a car for 5 days if it is the same cost to rent it for a week.

You can always call and ask what the late charges are. If you have a car out and go over the term, make sure you call and let them know you will be returning it late.

Finally, there are lots of ways to pay for the car, and some of them are way cheaper. When I am traveling non-business, I usually use Hotwire (or Priceline). You can save a lot of money, in my opinion. I also always check the website of the rental company for direct deals. Be careful when you are pricing out cars to find out what’s included–airport surcharges and taxes can sometimes be significant. Most companies give you unlimited mileage if you return the car where you rented it.

Not a big deal. If you tell them the circumstances, Enterprise has always been unusually good about extending car dates.

I just rented a car from Enterprise due to an issue with my regular car. I couldn’t give them an exact date when my car would come out of the shop, so I just called them every day and told them to extend the car. Not late fees or anything, they just charged me the daily rate again.

I drive their cars out of state all the time. Their weekend rates are good enough that when I take a weekender, I will rent a car for a few bucks to keep the miles off mine.

I tell them where I am going. If my plans change and I decide to hit another state, I ring them and let them know where I am going and its no problem.

Sorry about the loss of your brother.

This is not exactly peak season for car rentals in most places. Check a couple of agencies, explain your situation and ask what kind of deal they can give you on a suitable vehicle. Also, your own car insurance should normally cover you, so you might be able to decline additional coverages, but check this with your insurance agent first.
