The soc cit thread reminds of a question I have had. At one point, I was considering moving to the US. Canadian provinces don’t issue titles. All I have is the registration on my car and any paperwork involving its purchase is long gone. What would happen if I showed up at the NY state MVB and tried to register the car?
This is a purely theoretical question as I am no longer considering a move.
No experience with NY, but in Ohio they have a big book that they can look up various origins’ requirements for proof of ownership. As an example, some states don’t issue titles for motorcycles, or for motorcycles under a certain engine size, so the OH BMV will accept a registration slip from those states.
Certificate of Title or equivalent document for a used vehicle or a new vehicle registered before in another country. The DMV can also require a statement from the motor vehicle authorities in that country that the document is equivalent to a title certificate
NY accepts the Canadian registration document as proof of ownership, along with the other forms you would have to complete to import the car into the US (Customs, EPA, DOT). You would have been fine, just a few extra steps.
