A woman in my church is raising money for a guy on Death Row in Nevada. She says that the prisoners are not permitted to work and so if no-one sends you money, you cannot buy deodorant or soap and stuff like that at the prison store. She also said that it was not permitted to send him packages.
This sounds weird to me. I’ve been digging around on various search engines all morning trying to find out whether or not prisoners in Nevada can receive packages or work for money. I can’t find anything about it. Anybody know where to search?
CONTACT THE PRISON (sorry for the scream - but it’s really important).
Do NOT make any assumptions about what they can/cannot get, can/cannot have.
Each state has their own regs, and probably death row has some different ones as well. It makes no sense to send stuff to a prisoner if it’ll just get returned 'cause they can’t have it.
also, be careful of sob stories. Not all, but more than a few, folks who are locked up, have multiple levels of folks sending them stuff etc.
I suspect that death row inmates would not be able to do a work crew (for what I hope are obvious reasons). But the prison would be able to tell you if they supplied basic necessities such as soap and so on (they often do in indigent cases)
Incidentally, why does this woman have an overwhelming urge to send cash to an inmate convicted of a capital offense? Aren’t there some needy children in her neighborhood or some stray puppies? Just wondering… this is a head scratcher.
Wring: She didn’t say what prison he was in, and I can’t find a FAQ for the Nevada prison system. Thanks for the advice however. You are quite right about the sob stories; I’ve read a lot of them today while trying to track down whether or not there is a “no-work” policy for death row inmates in Nevada.
Evilhanz: I don’t know her or why she feels motivated to help prisoners. The church does have a kid’s center and helps to run a homeless shelter, so maybe she just wants to branch out.
