Carousel. Last Day Year of the City... How many in the city?

Right, so I’m flashing back and watching the great 70s epic Logan’s Run. Carousel begins and those at age 30 are striving for renewal.

I get thinking. It seems small. For an entire enclosed city the crowd seems light for an attendance at their evening bloodsport of Carousel.

Inside, I notice that there’s only 35 people flirting about striving for renewal. Even if you include the runner that’s 36 people ‘expiring’ on Capricorn 15, year of the city 2274.

A little math shows the population works out to 13,140. I’ve lived in town’s about that size for 20 years now. It’s just not effective to use all that time, effort and resources for such a small number.

So talk to me. We’re there more people were not seeing? The New You is labeled 486 so that implies a lot of surgical places.

Thoughts?

In the book, that society encompasses all of Earth. In the movie, it’s just D.C.under the domes - maybe 100s of thousands?

And maybe only people with a relation to the people on Carousel really show up - it’s not an entertainment.

How many citizens die before they are old enough to do the Carousel?

It is clearly a hedonistic place. Orgy rooms with drug vapors and all that. Perhaps a lot of people die prematurely due to risky behavior.

It is also very focused on looks and such. Some people might feel second rate and Carousel themselves, in a manner of speaking.

Actually the movie isn’t really clear on that. While it was clearly the only domed city in the region I don’t recall any reason to assume it was the only one on the planet.

I also don’t think it’s DC under the dome.

It’s clearly a few days walk to DC. And we see that it’s hilly/appalachian in terrain.

Then again, it’s also both in the middle of the hills AND next to a vast ocean. So you tell me.
