Carpal Tunnel Surgery

Interested in your experience if you had Carpal Tunnel Surgery.
Thanks.:smack:

My cousin had it and she was very happy with the results.

Welcome to the SDMB. The General Questions forum is for questions with factual answers. You’re looking for anecdotal information, so I’ll move this thread over to IMHO.

Hey! I have carpal tunnel. They thought I would need surgery, but as a last effort before resorting to that, my mom heard about this nuero-muscular therapist. He did all sorts of weird stuff to manipulate the bones in my hands and stuff, and now I’m much better. And no surgery!

I had the surgery, right hand only. It fixed my problem, which was numbness, tingling, and soreness, not the severe pain that some people get.

Healing was about three weeks. First week your hand is tightly bandaged and you have to sleep with it elevated. Second are third weeks are much easier. You need to wait to develop use of the hand again. I couldn’t even turn a doorknob when the bandages first came off (second or third week, can’t remember now).

You should look for a surgeon who has considerable experience in doing this. It is also advisable to find someone who does it arthroscopically, that is, with the smallest possible cut. That will help the healing process. Still, it is a deep cut and it will hurt.

Welcome aboard Uvula Jones.

I had CTS in my right hand years ago with severe pain, the tingles, numbness, the whole shebang. It came on after having a partial fusion in my right hand, so any typing etc aggravated the symptoms. They tried the steroid injections and physical therapy at first but with only minimal relief. It was only after surgery that the hand was functional again without pain.

I have a nifty little > shaped scar on the underside of my right wrist. It was bandaged for a week or so with only a bit of pain. When the bandages were removed they gave me physical therapy to strengthen the muscles and move the tendons. Felt fine and dandy after a couple weeks.

I have been having lots of problems now with my left hand and saw a specialist recently who recommended surgery straight away as the symptoms are strong, and even the tiniest amount of typing makes my fingers go funky… I know posting = pain but I like it here…

Here is a decent site that explains what CTS is, symptoms and treatment options.
Hope this is useful to you.

I had the surgery 20 years ago, on both hands. It helped quite a bit with the pain, but both hands still go numb now & then, & I have to be careful what I do or all my symptoms come back. As I recall, each incision took about 6 weeks to fully heal, but as someone mentioned, the arthroscopic is probably much better.

Even now I sometimes wear my wrist splint braces–the ones that wrap around your whole wrist & hand & have a metal piece inside to keep your wrist from bending. They help a lot, especially in humid weather.

I have assisted in several CT surgeries. I don’t envy anyone who has it done. I’ve heard from both sides, it helps some and for some it didn’t work. I’m going to echo Exapno Mapcase, get someone who is a whiz at it. And don’t watch during surgery. YIKES!

benson, watching was the funnest part of the whole thing. I was under a local and had an IV of mind numbing meds. I kept peeking over the drape and going “OOOH looky dat!!!” and asking all sorts of questions - what’s that, how did that work, etc. When I became too annoying for the anaesthesiologist by asking too many questions he just laughed at me and made me go to sleep.

I don’t have this numbness thing, but I have noticed recently that I suddenly get a pain in my wrist, hand or finger that feels as if I sprained or twisted it. I didn’t though, I was just sitting there. It goes away after a while and I get another twang a couple of days later. Could it be CTS, or what could it be?
