I remember my mother wearing the record out thirty years ago. What the hell is this dopey Porter Waggoner song about? I remember something about a guy throwing a ring down a well, swearing never to tell the truth about the Carroll County Accident.
Sir
Lyrics of The Carroll County Accident (written by Bob Ferguson). It’s about a child covering up his dead father’s extramarital affair. How touching.
Interesting parallel. In “Ode to Billy Joe,” Billy Joe and the narrator throw “something” off a bridge. (In the movie, we find out that it’s a doll.) The song references Carroll County, and Bobbie Gentry said (at the time of the hit) that she’d never tell why Billy Joe jumped of the Tallahatchie Bridge.
