Cary Grant - gay?

So, was Cary Grant gay? (Not that there’s anything WRONG with that, of course…) I’ve read that he shared a house with Randolph Scott for 30 years…but also that they could have installed a revolving door for all the women they had going in and out. Plus he was married what, five times?

I think this speculation started with a book that was published shortly after his death. Just curious to know the facts.

2. Was Cary Grant homosexual?

The only person who can truly answer this is Cary Grant - and, perhaps fortunately, he is not around to answer it. Some of his biographers (e.g. Higham and Moseley) claim he was homosexual. This is usually based on the speculation that occured in the 1930’s when Cary chose to share a house with Randolph Scott - see the Queers in History page. If this is the only evidence to suggest that Cary Grant was gay, then anyone who shares house/flat with a member of same sex must, by default, also be gay. So biographers who claim CG was gay, back this up by listing his openly gay friends. And as all of us know: if we have gay friends we must ourselves be homosexual Other biographers (e.g. McCann) claim these allegations are false and that Cary was heterosexual.

Many of the CG fans I have had contact with believe him to have been bisexual, since this allows them to accept the possibility that he may have been homosexual even if they don’t like the idea! But the question should not really be " Was Cary Grant homosexual? " but " Does it really matter? ". Believe what you want to believe - if you love Cary Grant for his on- screen image (and lets face it, most Cary Grant fans do!), his own sexuality is not important.

And if you decide that it is important and does matter, and want a clear and concise answer to this question, perhaps you should listen to the words of Cary himself. Most of the time he chose, in my opinion very wisely, not to comment on these allegations. The only comment that I know of came when he asked what he thought of unauthorised biographies. He said “They all repeat rumours that I’m a tightwad and that I’m homosexual. Now I don’t feel either of those is an insult, but it is all nonsense.”

But in a related note, 40 or so years ago, Liberace won a settlement of about £8000 in a libel settlement against a British newspaper that dared insinuate that he might be gay.

as i read this thread, all i could picture is Frank Gorshin saying, “Fruity, Fruity, Fruity”. Sorry if that goes over anybody’s head, but if i explained it it wouldn’t be funny ('course, i’m assuming it’s funny).

btw, cary grant took buttloads of acid in his later years. legally, too! look it up, it’s some interesting stuff. he once thought he was a penis rocket ship.
