Caste society and outsiders

Back when Hindu/Indian caste society was at its most strict, if total strangers showed up clearly from completely outside the society, how would they be treated? Specifically, would they be “untouchable”?

I’d guess as far as general hospitability is concerned, members of that society would be about the same as members of any society, ie, some would be nice and friendly and welcoming; and some would be selfish dickwads trying to rip these strangers off… did the precepts of the caste system in some way override this?
thanks
