I am relieved (in one way anyway) for kitteh. He is lucky to have a mama who took him in RIGHT AWAY.
I’m pretty sure it does hurt him to pee, though, since he only does it a little bit and he did it right next to the litter box this morning. He’s quarantined so I can tell how much he’s peeing without noise from the other cats. Hopefully my regular vet will be open tomorrow - their voice mail doesn’t say.
We were lucky to catch it at all - with three cats you can’t really tell who does what, and Dewey isn’t one to complain. I still can’t believe they didn’t charge me - they won a hell of a lot of goodwill from me, I tell you what. I’ve been feeling him up the way they did checking for a swollen bladder (not that I’m sure I’d know it if I felt it) and I’m pretty sure everything’s still normal to the touch - I’ll call my regular vet early tomorrow morning and see if they’re open on the holiday.
Are you sure there isn’t an emergency vet service, or an on-call vet in your practice? When I lived in a mid-sized Midwestern town, there was a 24/7 vet clinic. Here in Queens we have “Emergency Vet” who is only open at night, and holidays. Even when I lived in a very rural area, there was someone you could call for emergencies. (typically, the answering machine message of the regular vet will say: “if this is an emergency call…”).
That’s where I went Saturday night. They said he should be okay to go to his regular vet when they’re open. (Which is not today, although somebody answered the phone. He has an appointment tomorrow.) He’s still peeing with low volume.
It’s very serious. A few months ago this happened to my male cat, and, long story short, I had to have him put down a few days after I noticed he had trouble peeing. His was an extreme situation–my cat’s urethra was so clogged with crystals that the vet couldn’t get a catheter in there–but it’s always serious. Poor kitty.
