Cat Lovers & Vets: How to Catch a Lost Cat?

QN, hon! I’m so sorry you’re in this situation having to be away from the scene while your parents can’t / won’t help you look.

If it were me I’d try to get back there once a day and just stand outside and call for kitty for awhile, just so he has your familiar voice around periodically. I know it’s hard, both logistically with your busy life, and emotionally with the worry. I’m sending good vibes your way!

ps-keep working on your mom to keep her eyes open. I’m not sure if you need a trap, but if your mom can talk enough meowing baby talk to make him feel comfortable enough to meow back or to come to her, she’s at least another set of eyes and ears who can look around outside periodically. Keep asking her.

Be sure to check all the animal shelters as well. Does he have a tag or a chip?

He has a chip. I never put collars/tags on them because they never go outside. I’m kicking myself now for that decision. His sister will have some new jewelry soon, and hopefully he will too, when/if I find him.

My mom has an uncannily accurate meow. I’ll ask her to use it. Thanks.

the meow just may be the ticket.

last week i coaxed a stray in by meowing to her. apparently we had quite the convo.

i was also able to locate malenka the miraculous with meowing. i would meow, she would scream, i meowed, she would scream. finally i was able to reach under the deck and had contact. malenka was 3 days old at the time, and truely a miracule that we found a mostly black with a bit of white kitten at 8 pm. good thing she had really good lungs.

try the meow!!!

best of luck.

Like missbunny said, you should have more success if you call the animal shelters -animal protection- feral rescue crowd. But as they rely heavily on volunteers not every town has them. But you should be able to find one in the nearest larger town, drive there (or have them come drive up for a fee) and borrow/hire one of their life traps. Those are pretty big, like this: http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://petsafe-warehouse.com/live_animal_traps/images/914038.jpg&imgrefurl=http://petsafe-warehouse.com/live_animal_traps/index.htm&h=173&w=223&sz=11&hl=nl&start=6&um=1&tbnid=RRXryv12Va8HBM:&tbnh=83&tbnw=107&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dcat%2B%2522box%2Btrap%2522%26svnum%3D10%26um%3D1%26hl%3Dnl%26client%3Dopera%26rls%3Dnl%26sa%3DG

We got some traps from the police. In this area, the animal rescue folks apparently do not care to get involved in retrieving lost pets. When my mom called them for advice/direction, they told her “we don’t do that stuff” and hung up.

I have some calls in to various “pet detective” agencies, that will travel to your area with a trained dog to do a search. Since this is all my father’s fault, and he is acting like an ass about the whole thing (lying about what happened, refusing to apologize or take responsibility despite overwhelming evidence, oh, and SMILING when he broke the news to me that he’d lost my cat), my mother and I are seriously considering hiring one on his dime. I would think this was a nutty extreme with any other cat, but Rex is special.

You didn’t happen to call a “Mr. Ventura”, did you?

Good luck with the cat. I think the cat will be home when the cat is done roaming about. Mine did.

I am sorry for saying so, but your father sounds like a real jackass. Even if he doesn’t personally feel that a cat is worth getting upset over, one would hope he would understand that you ARE upset, and at least try to comfort and help you.

I hope your kitty comes home, I bet he will. I’ve known so many kitties in my life that ran away for days/weeks/etc., and they always come home when they’re good and ready (ie: hungry!).

Acc to the Pet Detective on NPR, a baited trap works best. You can listen to her interview with Terry Gross here.

Good luck.

Yes, the very nice pet detective I talked to in St. Louis also recommended baited traps as our best option. (No, her last name isn’t “Ventura.”)

No one should feel bad about calling my dad a jackass. He’s something of a sociopath.

Rex is back! I caught him with a tuna-baited trap at 2am this Wednesday morning. A quick visit to the animal hospital tentatively checks him out as being fine, though definitely thin. He is very happy to be back with me, purring all the time, but a little jumpy. His sister went into hiding when she saw him come in the house in a cage, but I think their reintroduction will proceed well.

Thanks to everyone who offered advice and support. I have to go cuddle a kitty now.

That’s great to hear!

Yay! I was hoping to click on this thread again and get good news.

That is wonderful.

Don’t be surprised if his sister is stand-offish for a while. He smells different. It may take several days for him to smell like the inside again. I am sure they will warm up to each other soon enough.

I’m happy to hear that! Great news for both of you.

Awesome, now post pics now damnit!

Oh, I feel so much better now - I’ve been worrying about you and Rex. Congratulations!

Yay! Give him a cuddle for me

Excellent news! I’m so glad you caught him.

Thank goodness. Attaboy, Rexxums!

Yay! So so glad you got your kitty back. Scritch him behind the ears for me.
