Rex is back! I caught him with a tuna-baited trap at 2am this Wednesday morning. A quick visit to the animal hospital tentatively checks him out as being fine, though definitely thin. He is very happy to be back with me, purring all the time, but a little jumpy. His sister went into hiding when she saw him come in the house in a cage, but I think their reintroduction will proceed well.
Thanks to everyone who offered advice and support. I have to go cuddle a kitty now.

YAY!!! Oh I’m so glad! Silly kitty. Good on you for having him checked out by the vet, glad he’s in good shape.
Don’t worry, he is practically overdosing on cuddles and scritches. He is just beside himself with happiness to be home. He got into bed with me at 5am, and couldn’t settle down. He tried approximately 127 different cuddle positions, and kneaded me almost to death. I think the switch on his purr machine is stuck in the “on” position.
Question: It’s been 14 hours, and he hasn’t peed yet. Does anyone know if I should be worried? He has had a fair bit of water.
His weight loss may be as much attributed to dehydration as to lack of food. I wouldn’t worry about his not urinating unless it went on longer. Could you give the vet another call, to ask the question?
OK, I feel weird updating to talk about this, but Rex finally did pee sometime in the wee hours this morning. It was a mixed blessing, though, because he loves to throw litter when he gets to go in a fresh, clean box. So he threw half the contents of the box onto my bedroom carpet, and then came bounding back into bed, demanding cuddles. He’s lucky he’s so cute.
Pics when I get a free moment–probably Friday or Saturday.
We lost Cookie Monster for a few hours a couple of months ago - a houseguest left the back door open - and it was awful. She had gotten out of the garden and was too stupid to come back. We were very lucky that her eyes shone in the flashlight we were using, and she was too scared to move, so we were able just to pick her up. It’s a horrible feeling.
The peeing thing was probably nerves. Cookie can’t pee when we’re travelling anywhere - she’ll hold it for up to 24 hours.

Awesome news! (well I mean baout the cat returning and well, I guess about the peeing). Have you considered one of those covered litter boxes. We have one like this (Booda Dome).

His usual box keeps him from tossing stuff over the side (mostly), but I had to buy a cheap litter pan for him while he’s confined in my bedroom, away from his sister. And cheapo pan is shallow. I won’t be using it anymore, once this is all over. Now that he’s widdled, I am going to reintroduce them soon.
