Cat Problems - need advice

If you can handle his paws enough to trim his claws, you should be able to put Soft Claws nail caps on them. I have two kittens, and the Maine Coon is six pounds but is still just a turning four-months-old on Wednesday kitten with all of the clumsiness and climbing that goes along with the age, so I capped him the third day I had him.

What, like at the vet? You’d be throwing money away, not to mention subjecting the cat to unnecessary stress.

Clip 'em when he’s napping, a few at a time, doesn’t have to be every toe each session. Get him used to having his feet handled (touch his paws while snuggling, etc.) and nip off the sharp tip.

The more often you do this, the easier it gets. Start him NOW while he’s young.

My folks had a cat that was sweet and tractable (and very smart), and she turned into the Demon Cat from Hell when they tried to clip her claws. They eventually gave up and took her to PetSmart where, to my dad’s disgust, she sat quietly and let them clip her claws with zero issues; he said the clipper said it wasn’t unusual.

But thanks to advice from a different board handling my Imhotep’s paws a lot let me eventually be able to clip her claws.

I sneak up on mine when they’re relaxed and clip as many as I can get away with at a time. That’s rarely the whole batch, but you don’t have to do them all at once, or even all in the same week.

As mine are indoor/outdoor they don’t need it done when they’re young as they wear their claws down enough on trees and so on, and I have to introduce them to the idea when they’re old enough to become less active. I’ve never had a cat whose claws I couldn’t trim at all.

Just, again, be very very careful never to cut into the quick; it’ll hurt if you do, and that will definitely put the cat off the idea. And get a pair of the specialized cat nail clippers; they only cost a few dollars, and make the job a lot easier.

The cat probably had a kickback deal with PetSmart.
