The play/draw rule is very much a tournament rule, and exists only for duels; multiplayer games use the original rule, although I’m not too sure about the official two-headed giant rules.
That rule has been shown to be such an efficient way of making the die roll have less influence on results of the match, that one study done at a large multi-day tournament showed that the winner of the die roll won less than 50% of the matches at that tournament, suggesting that whatever advantage winning the die roll gave, the random noise even over thousands of matches overpowered it. A previous similar study done before the rule was implemented showed a very significant advantage for winning the die roll, with win percentages over 60%.
