Can I get a historical exception? I actually found myself invoking Butterfly McQueen yesterday. “I don’t know nothing ‘bout birthin’ no babies!”
Mmmm…purple. - Homer, no, not that one, THAT one.
I am smart S-M-R-T! -Homer
“…took a wrong turn in Albequerque.” -Bugs Bunny, The Immortal.
And for some odd reason, since I’ve never seen the movie, heck, I’ve even taught my toddler to say it “Help, Help, I’m being repressed!” -Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
The hubby and I constantly use “Move along, Fat Boy” from The Simpson’s (Crusty to Homer). This is even after we saw the episode in syndication and discovered that this is not what Crusty said!
“Theres been a cock up in the catering department” British comedy the Good life.
“Boom, boom” Basil Brush (British children’s show - did it make it to the States?)
“Gidday Bruce” “Gidday Trev” From a NZ comedy sketch show - either McPhail & Gadsby or “A Week of It.”
I think that was the only episode of that show I ever saw. The line I remember is “My pants are tight!” That was a funny episode. I don’t know why I never watched any others.
Well, we got “G’die Bruce” from Monty Python. Precise pronunciation depends on how one pronounces “day.” From your username I can’t guess if you pronounce it more or less correctly (Canadian) or in the Kiwi manner.
The Sears Tower was recently renamed the Willis Tower. The local station that shows “Diff’rent Strokes” ran a cut of Gary Coleman asking, “What’choo talkin’ 'bout, Willis?” and followed it with a slide that said that they will still call it the Sears Tower, too. Just like the rest of us.
I just found your Monty Python sketch on Youtube but I can’t find my NZ ones. Can any of the other kiwis help me. My aging memory tells me it was from some one overseas saying all NZ men were called Bruce or Trev - could have been inspired by the Python sketch.
My user name is cause I was born in Canada, but have lived in NZ for many years!
Was the show set in a civil service office? I think there was a Beryl in the show as well, New Zealand produced - I can remember watching it but can’t remember the name, not so sure that it was McPhail and Gatsby though…
That was NZ situation comedy Gliding On. Very funny - esp if (like me) you had ever worked for a NZ government department. I don’t think it was from that - but not positive.
