Let’s not pretend you’re into substantive arguments. ![]()
He’s just protecting his momma.
Well, yes. But they were either speaking metaphorically or transparently doing it to butter up the Christian vote. That or they were genuinely hearing voices, which is quite a bit scarier.
Obviously my position would be that if the Pope claims to hear Divine guidance, be it in a booming voice or by reading the shaking of the leaves like they did back in Ancient Greece ; then he must belong in one of these three categories. But that’s 'cause I’m a cynical nihilistic bastard.
If you do buy into Catholic theology however, then mustn’t you concede that when the Pope says he’s speaking for god almighty or is guided by same, his credibility in this is higher than some fast-talking suit whose sole claim to fame is swindling a strict majority of the people, who by and large are simple motherfuckers ?
Well, that specific bit was about Jesus, not the Church itself - my point that by grokking that seminal triune conundrum one might be more likely to figure out what the hell is going on with the Church.
So, no, the Church doesn’t per se, but then again no man becomes a priest who doesn’t hear (or believes he hears) the calling of god, if only dimly. Else what would be the point ? We’ve moved past the dreams of the second sons of primogeniture, I dare hope.
And surely no priest becomes a bishop, no bishop a cardinal, no cardinal a Pope if god doesn’t will or allow it. Sure, god and his bureaucracy might have other stuff to do than monitor every last pissant curate, but surely the higher you get in the holy food chain the more wise and saint-like you’re supposed to be. Right ?
If not, the problem would come full circle since, according to Bible canon, whatever the Catholic Church does is mirrored Up There and thus the kingdom of god would be all about child buggery, with a side of whoremongering back in the Borgia days. Meaning neither the Church *nor *god would then be infallible or perfect and it’s all going pear shaped.
I kid, of course - on the square. I personally can’t take any of this stuff seriously. But I’m pretty interested in the fact that *you *seem todo. You never struck me as an idiot. A blathering asshole, sure, sometimes :o. But a clever one.
Not evidenced, and even if it was, not relevant… You made a simple mistake, and you’re choosing not to recognize it.
No. At worst, I wrote something that could be taken two ways, and – unsurprisingly – you have chosen to take it in the way that makes me wrong.
But I didn’t make a mistake. I was well aware of what I wrote and when I wrote it.
By the way, what percentage godly DOES the RCC claim? If they paid taxes, would it be enough for an expense claim or would they have to depreciate?
There isn’t enough ambiguity in the phrases you wrote to support such a generous interpretation, but I won’t dwell on it. I’m prepared to accept that you phrased your thoughts poorly, for what it’s worth.
I have no doubt that what you wrote was phrased to say just what you wanted it to say.
I certainly believe the Pope’s claim to being guided by the Holy Spirit to a much greater degree than I would a “fast talking suit.”
No, I don’t agree. That’s certainly the hoped-for state of affairs, but there’s no guarantee that it’s true in all cases. I have no doubt at all that men enter the priesthood for reasons other than their genuine discernment of a personal vocation.
Not remotely correct. This type of thinking on your part makes clear why there’s a fundamental disconnect in how you view things. The “absurd paradox” you struggle with is of your own making.
It’s true that God allows all things to happen. But that doesn’t compel the conclusion you suggest here – God has allowed plenty of unholy, undeserving, and downright evil sons of bitches to become bishops, cardinals and even popes. It’s a special case of the general issue known as “the problem of evil,” which at its core is: how can an omnipotent, good God be reconciled with the obvious existence of evil in the world?
If you think that the Church teaches that the progression from deacon to priest to bishop to pope is one of a sieve that at each stage filters the undeserving and permits only the holy and deserving to pass, you’re completely in error.
Huh?
This one, I don’t even follow. Nowhere does Bible canon say that whatever the Catholic Church does on Earth is duplicated in Heaven.
And yet, according to a couple of my other interlocutors, I’m so stupid that I said, “Assuming you meant ‘during confession,’” at 6:09 PM and then at 8:55 PM I hoped everyone forgot I said it.
The RCC makes no claim whatsoever about their percentage of godliness.
Well, that’s just leaving money on the table. They could use a few good Jewish accountants.
This happened in Chile back in May, but apparently has gotten into the news just now.
Hundreds of people showed up to protest his installation ceremony, and Pope Francis called them ‘dumb.’
Reviving this because: Pennsylvania grand jury accuses hundreds of Catholic priests of sexually abusing over a thousand children.
Now, you can either choose to believe that all the scum-sucking child-raping Catholic priests just happened to live in the state of Pennsylvania…or you can open your fucking eyes and see the wide spread rot in that church as a whole.
