Cats and The "Bulls eye" on My Rug

I have this rug in my living room: http://www.homedecorators.com/detail.php?parentid=20234&classification=7&typeDefId=1622&typeDefId=1622&spec=130

Independently, each of my four cats repeatedly gravitates to the “bulls eye” in the center. They’ll just sit there on it for a while and move on, and then another will come by and sit right on the circle. Why is that? Is this some sort of cat behavior that can be explained?

It is where they await instructions from the mothership.

Nice rug, BTW!

I knew it! That’s where the command to sharpen their claws on said rug come from. The little fuckers!

Re: the rug, I’m looking to replace it. It sheds because the Little FuckersTM (as I collectively and lovingly refer to them as) are always fucking with it. I’m looking for a woven rug with no nap (is that the right word?). Look for this one on E-bay! ;o)

My fuzzbutts never crawl on rugs, but they spend an inordinant amount of time burrowing under them. They must be part badger.

It kind of looks like an abstract butthole. Maybe they think it’s the designated butthole parking spot.

I think you may be on to something!

I’ll have to affix one of these on the rug so they’ll get the picture: http://www.foodsafety.gov/~fsg/f01pupno.gif

I have read that cats instinctively seek out borders. In this solid color rug, the only border is by the pattern. This was explained as something that developed because cats that habitually situated themselves on the border between one type of surface and another would be harder for their prey to notice and cats with that behavior would be better nourished.

Yanno, that border thing explains why Cat #1 likes sitting on the border between the carpet and the wood kitchen floor…

The Straight Dope has enlightened one more mind today!

That is fascinating.

Dude, if you ever find a way to explain most cat behaviours, enlighten us!
