Cats and Treats

My cat, Shan, will not eat treats from someone’s hand; only if you set the treat down on the floor will he deign to eat it. Now, way back when we had cats at home, we never had kitty treats, so I don’t know, is this normal?

Kat,

My female kitty is like that, she wont take it from my hand. But (may he rest in peace a year ago today) my male cat would take it from my hand, my mouth and if I let him, from my plate.

BTW, I am talking food in general. My female cat wont even eat cat treats.

My cat won’t eat hardly anything but purina cat chow. He prefers kitten chow, but I ration that to him. And nothing from my hand. He doesn’t really even care about tuna. Or chicken.

Sorry about your loss, techchick68. :frowning:

My cat will go straight for treats that are anywhere except on my hand. If I put treats in my hand, she’ll study them for about a minute before eating them.

To answer the OP, and from the few examples given, it seems to depends on the individual cat.

As for me, Mud will take the treat from my hand: if I close my fist, she will bat at it and try to squeeze between my fingers. (She KNOWS something is in there!!)

I was lying in bed one day, engrossed in a book and eating a donut (because that’s the kind of thing you get to do when you’re single) and I felt my arm move, just a little.

I looked up at my half-eaten donut to discover that my cat was daintily nibbling bits off of it.

What horrified me were these two thoughts: 1. How long had he been doing that? and 2. How would I know what cat spit tasted like?

Yeah, he’ll take food off my plate once I give him the go-ahead, drink out of my glass if I don’t catch him at it, and generally do everything but help himself to the stuff in the fridge.

Corr

Corrvin-you’re lucky, IMO. Every time I open the refrigerator, my kitten trys to jump in (if she’s within earshot and sprinting distance-i.e. about 500 feet, it seems). She knows there are some serious goodies in there that we’re hoarding for ourselves, you see …

Check your Cat Operating Manual. There is no “normal”.

Come on, you’re dealing with a cat!

LMAO @ all of you. Especially Corrvin and the cat-spit.

Thank goddess for cat lovers. Always something to laugh!

My female cat [Jansen] eats anything, anywhere, anyhow.

Her brother [Jacobs] is more of a gourmet. He likes toenails and contact-lenses.

While waiting for LifeOnWry to consult her cats on this issue, I asked Beru “Da Squid” KittyCat, who allows me to reside with her at the Duplex of Solidude. She explained that some cats have to feel like they have stalked or killed their prey to satisfy an feline instinct. She will eat from my hand, she says, because she’s domesticated me. Other of the natural world leaders (as she calls them) prefer to eat from a bowl, or the floor, because it makes them feel that they have killed what they are about to eat. Beru went on to say that the cats of the earth also like it when little nuggets of food, or kitty treats, are scattered in weird places around the house, so that they feel like they are hunting something.

Do any of you cat slaves have mice? I had a problem with field mice 'till my cat took over the house. No more.
He only catches them so that I can’t. Just to prove a point, I suspect. I haven’t even seen a mouse in years.
BTW; We have a ‘Garfield’ altar. With candles.

I don’t know if cats catch most mice or if the mice see the cats and leave.

I never thought about it till I read this post. All the cats I have had or fed would NOT take it from the hand.

I tried it today on my two neighbor cats. Nope they wouldn’t take it from the hand. Took it off the ground.

Seems like taking it from the hand is a learned behaviour.

Interestingly enuff I had a dog and when we would play if my hand was palm UP he would take it into his mouth but as soon as i put it palm DOWN he would withdraw his mouth and back off.

Thanks. I don’t know much about his history and I worry about him sometimes–another thing he does is if you get your foot too close to him, he takes off like a shot…

My experience is that they will not.
I think they are afraid that they will bite me. On the other hand, maybe my hands smell bad to a cat.
