I use those cat food can lids. And when I give them leftovers I microwave it for five seconds or so. I don’t give them half of the can in one sitting.
In my case, I have one cat who will eat ONLY wet food, two who will eat both wet and dry food, and then another cat who will eat ONLY dry food. (She has some kind of aversion to textures).
Strangely enough though, they’re not nearly as picky about people food.
I make cat treats from chicken livers. They get about a thumb size piece every afternoon (don’t be late). I tried the pkg. Cat treats. OMG, they went crazy for them. It was like crack for cats. I stopped that as soon as they wouldn’t eat regular food as long as those were in the house. And they KNEW they were in the house. It seriously took 2 weeks for them to stop looking for them. Siamese cats look for things while howling at the top of their lungs. I almost lost my mind over that.
my fleabags get friskies… we divide 2 cans among 5 cats at 10-10 30 pm……. te oldest cat begins howling at anywhere from 8 -9:45… and it has to be pate style… theres never much left…….
Friskies sells something called “Lil’ Soups.” It’s a very small container of gravy with a few flakes of meat at the bottom. They are $1 each, and they are not a meal, just a treat.
Friskies also has “extra gravy” food in the tuna sized cans. The chunky style probably has more gravy than the Lil’ Soups, and is cheaper.
I feed them to my older cat quite often. He’s been having thyroid problems, and has lost weight as we’re trying to find the right dose of medicine.
We went to the grocery store today, so he expected a treat. He always expects something special when we’ve been out hunting. I gave him a soup. After we put up the groceries, he expected another one! He sat there forever, I finally had to distract him so he would forget.
Ellen Degeneres said, “Cats can’t read, but they can count. When they see what cat food you’ve got the most of, they won’t eat it any more”.
It was funnier when she said it.
My idiot cat (and his deceased brother) loves fish. He had horrible bowel problems that I eventually deduced came from food with gluten.
Damn near every brand has gluten!
I finally settled on Blue Buffalo Wilderness dry food (costing an arm and a leg) with a nighttime feeding of Fancy Feast broth–fish, please-- spiked with a “serving” of Purina fortiflora supplement.
We eventually had the cats tested for allergies. They tested positive for: wheat (no surprise), white potatoes, pork, and white rice!
I spent hours in grocery and pet stores trying to read labels written in 1-point font, trying desperately to find gluten free foods that they would eat, and wouldn’t result in litter box presents that stunk up the whole house with an aroma worse than skunk!
Pity me. I must always have a cat, because I’m addicted to the purr.

A few years ago my senior girl Remy had some medical issues and was super picky about what wet food she would eat. There were some days when she would reject 3-4-5 cans (she doesn’t like dry food). My other cats don’t like wet food. I just couldn’t justify throwing out good food when there are starving kitties in the world. So I started putting out the leftovers at the end of my driveway, under cover of darkness, for the neighborhood strays. This is a story about the unintended consequences.
It didn’t take long for the kitties to figure out where that awesome wet food was coming from. They started hanging out in my yard. There were three of them at that time. I fed them every night and then started giving them some dry food in the morning. By winter two of them started sleeping on my porch. I bought them a shelter when it got really cold. I told everyone that they were not my cats. The third cat disappeared that spring and by that time I was feeding them three times a day. The next winter one of the kitties was killed by a dog and I brought the other one inside.
Remy eventually got her medical issues straightened out but she is still a picky eater. So a few times a week I will have leftovers. I put it out for three neighborhood strays who DO NOT LIVE ON MY PORCH (I gave the shelter away last summer). They are not my cats.
