CD burner help needed!

I have a low-end Philips CD burner which recently started having problems. I want to use it to back up install programs which I bought online and subsequently downloaded, problem is I successfully burned one of those programs and now it won’t recognize the disc. It also won’t burn any other CDs, presumably it won’t recognize those discs either. I’ve used one of those CD lens cleaners but the problem persists. Any ideas? Should I just buy a new burner? The one I have is about 32×8×4 and hardly used.

Hi Jeff Olsen
What O/S are you using?
Have you gone into device manager and looked for any yellow splats?
Have you tried checking to see if the CD you previously burned, works in another computer?
What burning program are you presently using?
Have you tried deleting it from device manager and letting your system pick it up on reboot?
Sorry… more questions than answers…but we need more info please?

Try a different brand of blank CD. My burner is really picky, rejecting a whole stack of one brand and gladly burning a whole stack of another. Not likely your problem but it may help.

You can [try getting updated drivers for it, but it really does sound like a hardware failure. See if another drive recognizes those disks (maybe borrow a buddy’s PC). If the disks are fine, and new drivers don’t do it, then just replace the drive. They’re cheap enough these days.

Should have provided more info to begin with, problem is I’m at work and the system with the burner is at home. Will provide more info when I can.

OS: Win98SE
Device problems: one involving my mouse for some reason.
Does burned CD work in other drives? Yes.
Burning software: Roxio Easy CD Creator 5

I had the same problem. I am pretty sure it is Roxio that is the issue. I am using the same version and thought I had a Bum burner too. However mine being pretty new I tried different software before laying full blame on the drive. I downloaded “Nero” from www.download.com and it works like a charm.

Incidentily… What I found puzzeling is that I had no problem using Windows Media Player to burn music cd’s but when trying to make data disc’s with Roxio all I got were errors. Also if you are using CDR’s as opposed to CDRW I think that the errors encountered when using Roxio make the disc unusable. I went through a whole pack trying to troubleshoot.

Good luck
