We have a ceiling fan currently wired to a wall switch. It needs to be replaced. We do not want one with a remote. If I but a ceiling fan with a remote can I just hook it up as the one is now, and it will work with wall switches? My thinking is that wiring is wiring and of course it will, but just want to be 1000% sure before I start.
You are asking if you get a unit with a remote, will it also work with the wall switches? I believe so. My units like this have worked in two ways:
-the remote has fit in a handy holder over that screws over the light switch. This allows me to reach all of the speed controls and so on, or even move the remote to somewhere else in the room if I want it.
-It comes with a remote that you don’t set up. You use the pull down chains. The light switch turns the power on and off. You can leave it “on” all the time and just use the chains.
If you are talking about a switch in the wall that already has all of the speed controls, and dimmers, you are looking for a different type of unit, but should be able to find it. Just be clear what you need before you get to the store.
We were disappointed when we got our new fans - we wanted wall switches and pullchains like with all of our old ones, but could not find them. Our new ones have remotes, but on/off is controlled with the wall switch.
The light switch will turn it on with whatever settings it was on when you turned it off. For example, right now, only the lights are on. When you flip the wall switch, the lights turn on. If you wish the fans to go on or to change speed, you have to use the remote.
Not what we wanted, but it works, now that we are used to it. The remote fits in a bracket that we mounted on the wall right next to the switch. If we hadn’t we figured we’d always be losing it.
Hope this helps.
You can set it put to turn on/off with a wall switch, but the remote probably controls the speed and direction, and that may or may not be transferable to the switch.
Yeah - that’s what I was trying to say, Just a while bunch less clearly and using a bunch more words!
This is mostly correct. However you might be able to control the speed with a dimmer switch. Ive seen it done. The problem is that fans with remotes don’t have chains.
But why would you buy one with a remote if you don’t want a remote?
I have this dual-purpose wall switch (or a variant thereof). One 3-position slider controls L/M/H fan speed & one controls lighting. Since the pull chain also controls L/M/H speed, it’s effectively a 9-speed fan (though I’m sure there’s overlap between one being high & the other one low & vice versa, giving me less than 9 distinct speeds).
A quick googling shows the big orange hardware box still sells ceiling fans with pull chains so you should be able to recreate what I have today.
About 20 years ago we installed a ceiling fan controlled by a light switch. With one flick it would turn on the fan (to whatever the last speed was - we rarely change fan speeds). With two flicks (like a double-click) it would turn on the light, and with three flicks it would turn on both. BUT I can’t find that type of switch for sale any more… Any ideas on where to find this switch?
