No no. Thank you.
The author Christopher Moore seems like a nice and approachable guy - I went to a booksigning of his. A little anxious for the crowd’s love and approval, but very down to earth and grateful, nonetheless. And funny.
These two are only “celebrities” if you have lived in Atlanta for over a decade, but … Keith Kalland (the traffic reporter) and Bill Nigut (the politics reporter) are two of the nicest human beings I’ve ever met. Both are very tall men, too.
I go to a lot of bluegrass concerts/festivals. The big name acts are consistently out mingling & jamming with the fans. They really are just one of the gang and it’s obvious how much they love what they do. Many times I’ve eaten dinner with them before a show and a few times had a drink with them after a show. They’re a really fun sort.
This summer I saw the Del McCoury Band in a nearby town. The next day I was driving to watch my son’s swim meet and while going through my town, there was the band, in a couple rented SUV’s. I pulled alongside then and they said they had taken a wrong turn trying to get to the Kansas City airport. We pulled off the road and I directed them back to the right road. They were just as unassuming and polite as when on stage. And they seemed genuinely surprised to be recognized in traffic.
Yes, Gilbert Gottfried is hilarious. I bet his real-life personality is similar, but more toned-down than the guy on TV & stage. He was in one of the most memorable Cosby Show episodes ever. Cliff was looking to buy a car and was hiding the fact that he was a doctor. While discussing the car price with the salesman, G.G. sees him through the window and yells, “DR. HUXTABLE!!!” Perfect.
John Maynard Keynes comes to mind. Brilliant economist and patron of the arts, but something of a hound dog with both sexes romanically.
He’s been a friend of friends for 20 some years. The Twin Cities SF/Fantasy community is small. (I wouldn’t date Steve Brust either, though I’ve had many opportunities to have sex with him, somehow, I’ve passed on them all.)
(On second thought, maybe he’s only been in my circle 15 years. It was before he was well known though.)
I’ve met or worked with Nikki Sixx, Steven Tyler, Gene Simmons and Bret Michaels on numerous occasions over the past 20 years and can state with confidence that they rarely if ever play the rock star card. Nikki is funny and spontaneous, Steven goes out of his way to acknowledge the behind-the-scenes people who make his shows and social events a success, Gene is uncomplainingly patient and admires people who refuse to suck up to him (almost said “kiss his ass” but that would have been totally groanworthy), and even back at the height of his fame Bret made every effort to meet his fans and make them feel like old friends. I know they all have their off days and aren’t perfect, but as I said, these observations are made on far more than just one encounter.
And I guess James Hetfield must have been having an off day when I met him, because he refused to say a word. So it goes. Still love the Met’.
Actually, based on my brief meeting - he’s very shy.
