Tom Dempsey the place kicker born without toes on one foot who managed to kick a 63 yard field goal died at 73. His record for longest field goal stood for 43 years. The cause of death is COVID-19 but he was in bad health for years. He was living in a care facility while suffering with dementia.
You know, I was watching that game when he made that kick. I was in junior high I think, standing around in the living room, as the family was about to go out and get our Christmas tree. The game was on television, and I never paid attention to football. But there it was, his team down two points with two seconds to go, and the only option was that field goal. And by God he did it. Even folks on the other side cheered. It was said that someone tried to protest “he was wearing a special shoe”, and the protest was denied because no objection was made before the game. And besides, their players could wear the same shoe, if they were willing to cut off half their foot.
Don’t ask me how but supposedly the NFL later scientifically tested if the shoe gave him an advantage. They decided he had a disadvantage because there was less margin for error.
Of course one of the reasons why the record stood for so long is that there has to be very specific circumstances before a team would even consider taking the kick.
