Celebrity Death Pool 2020

What’s all this then?

Oilers’ Colby Cave, 25, dies after suffering brain bleed.

From the same link, Ex-Kings, Rangers coach Tom Webster dies at 71.

Pat Stapleton, longtime Blackhawks defenseman, dies at 79

FWIW, these people are connected with the NHL.

Pat (Whitey) Stapleton was from my hometown. I’m saddened by his passing, although at 79 he had a pretty good run, or skate.

Yet, it looks like he never played for a Canadian (nhl) team. Is that fairly typical?

Yes. Most people have never played for a Canadian NHL team.

All joking aside, in the 72-73 season when Whitey last played in the NHL there were 16 teams, only three of which were in Canada: Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver.

Anyway, it doesn’t matter lots and lots of Canadians have never played on a Canadian team. In a 31 team league today only 7 teams are based in Canada. No big deal.

Sir Sterling Moss has taken his final lap.

Nobody had hime here, or on the other board, but I also run a deathpool on a British based board and two posters had him there.

This is a bit of a bugger. Tim Brooke Taylor, the UK actor and comedian best known for the comedy troupe The Goodies, the radio show I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue, and the TV series Me And My Girl has died aged 79 from COVID-19. What a sad way to end a stellar comedy career.

Timothy Brown, former NFL player and actor passed away at 81. He was probably best known for his role in MASH, and on the show during the first year. Unfortunately, the character nickname was so offensive it wasn’t even mentioned in that CNN article, just referring to Capt. Oliver Harmon Jones.

Apparently the name was so offensive that you couldn’t even mention it in your post.

FWIW, His nickname was “Spearchucker” Jones.

Guess I am naive, never heard “spearchucker” other than watching repeats of MASH, and never knew that it is considered “Racist”.

BTW, the CNN article has been updated to say he was 82 and not 81. Just in case it matters.

It’s definitely an “african tribal guy” type slur. I’m not sure if it is clearer in the books, but I remember thinking it was racist when I saw the movie. The idea is that he throws the football well like a tribal guy might throw a spear.

I have to admit, I was also confused when they did not state his character name in the CNN article. Everybody, pretty much, has a nickname on MASH. Hawkeye, Trapper John, Duke, Radar, etc.

Not-so-Goodie: Tim Brooke-Taylor-79.

IIRC in the book( which I read in 1972) he got the nickname because he threw the javelin in college track as well as playing football.

Yep. It’s in the book. It’s also apparently mentioned in the movie, but I don’t remember.

I’m guessing it was a joke by the author (and by extension the screenwriter) as a subversion of the slur.

SNL did a tribute video: https://twitter.com/nbcsnl/status/1249207928625803264

Another SNL connected death, writer Michael McCarthy

Andy Gonzalez, bassist.

Golfer Doug Sanders has passed away at 86.

Glenn Beckert, 4-time All-Star for Cubs, dies at 79.

COVID-19 claims mathematician John Conway, 82. :frowning:
