Well, many metal fans point to the “Black Album” (their self-titled one) as the point in which Metallica sold out. Many people mistakenly believe it’s during the “Load”, when they cut their hair short, or during the whole napster thingamabopper.
They say because Cliff Burton died, and “…and justice for all” being the last album with his influence, that they failed to produce the progressive, complex metal music that fans were used to. In fact, the “Black Album” is more hard rock than it is metal, with it’s radio-friendly length songs, and glaring lack of palm muting.
I only know this because i was one of many teenagers to go through a “metal phase”.
Moby sold all the songs from his album “Play”, i don’t think he sold out, I think he did the smart thing.
I’m not suprised when anybody “sells out” anymore. People are greedy and everybody has their price. Everybody.
First of all, let me tell you I LOVE Ozzy. I’ve been a fan of his since I was a kid in the 70’s. He’s an icon to me. He has always been an underdog, an anti-hero. He has never been a slave to musical trends, he has always been himself, and has had a career which has somehow defied gravity for over thirty years.
What bothers me now is that the TV show has made him just another part of pop culture. He has been completely demystified, defanged and homogenized. I don’t really blame Ozzy for this, I think the success of the show caught the family completely by surprise, and, frankly, Ozzy doesn’t really seem to be that keenly aware of what’s going on around him any more. They should have stopped the show after that one season though. It’s really just the same stuff over and over again anyway. Everybody says the eff word, Ozzy can’t make toast, the dogs piss on the sofa. I laughed at the first season, it was sort of amusing, but it was already starting to get old by the last couple of episodes.
Now they’re going to two more seasons, and they’re only doing it for the money. I’m worried that Ozzy will become a joke and that if the TV show goes bad it could hurt his music career. I’m sort of surprised that they took the deal because I would have thought that Ozzy already had an assload of money as it was.
Plus, didn’t some car commercial use “Crazy Train” in it
I read somewhere that Moby didn’t keep the money from the commercials. Instead he donated it to charities. Like, if a song was in a car commercial, all the money went to an enviromentalist group that was anti-cars.
Of course, I don’t have anything ot back that claim up…
Hmmm, I wonder where the money goes if the Arbor Day Foundation uses one of his songs.
I remember I just about shit when I saw Harlan Ellison doing a Geo commercial.
“So, you’re selling your electrical engineering designs now? You’re working for Intel? It used to be about the circuits, man. What happened to you? Why did you sell out?”
I dont know if I beleive in “selling out.” If I was a brilliant artist and could fund my endeavour for a gazillion years by painting one stupid ass corny mural, Id consider doing it. And if I did it I wouldnt hate myself forever for it.

WSLer : This looks to me to a borderline personal attack which you know do not belong here. Do you have any justification to accuse raisinbread of this? If not, please keep your smart remarks to yourself.
Thank you.
In Japan, Jodi Foster and Harrison Ford do make up and beer commercials, respectively.
Dionne Warwick doing ads for the Psychic Friends Network
When I heard The Clash’s London Calling used for a Jaguar commercial, I considered that a major sellout. That is, unless they didn’t have control over it or somebody needs a kidney or something…
Edmund Hillary talking about climbing Everest and somehow comparing it to owning a Ford.
Huh?
How did you feel about the same song being used in the new james Bond movie?
I don’t know if it’s selling out, or if they had anything to do with it, but I can’t say I was thrilled when I heard a Jesus and Mary Chain song being used for a beer commercial.
That pretty much sums up every sell-out.
Oh… And sorry if this is a kinda hot topic… I didn’t think it was quit controvercial enough to toss into the pit.
If it gets too heated, please do close it.
Hope made some really dreadful movies in the sixties. You’re right that the Bobcat has virtually no talent, and Hope made many, many entertaining movies, but let’s not forget some real crappers:
Boy, Did I Get a Wrong Number!
I recall Sean Connery taking some heat after all his pro-Scotland talk when he agreed to do ads for Japanese Whiskey. I wouldn’t say he sold out just because he did a commercial, but because he did one that seemed to go against what he used to stand for.
