Celery, the un-food?

One rumor I’ve heard is that celery is so difficult to digest and has so few calories, that it takes more energy to digest it than you can get out of the plant. This would mean that it is completely impossible to gain weight while eating celery, and that if you ate a lot of celery it would probably make less room for “real” food, making it an ideal diet food. This sounds plausible, but is this for real or like the infamous “beer and ice cream diet” that resulted from an extremely misplaced decimal point?

Even if is is true, it sounds a ghastly way to lose weight - the stuff is foul!

This keeps coming up every so often. The magic of celery, not.

My brother-in-law (Cecil’s wisdom notwithstanding) has a saying for celery:

If pigs won’t eat it, neither will I.

I don’t know if pigs eat the crap or not. I just know I’d rather chew on tennis shoe tongues for better nourishment.

The guy in Dwyr’s link did not take into effect the energy it takes to digest said celery, only the chewing.

Celery is an un-food only because it is completely inedible, IMO.

I kind of like the stuff. Particularly with peanut butter.

See, now this is how I know that I’m a complete mutant freak. I like celery.

Celery with peanut butter and raisins!

Yum.

Celery is only an “un-food” in that it’s one of those things God invented that was only meant to have something smeared upon it. Like water crackers.

I’m with you, Kat. Celery’s one of my favorite foods, even when plain.
