Cell phone plans: Pay as you go?

Aargh! I’m so tired of this! (http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=251418)
Now, since I’ve been trying for 2 weeks, and cricket won’t help me by reflashing the software (technical term? used by the customer service people. I assume it means reformatting and uploading the software)…

So does any other provider offer a pay-monthly plan like this? I’m wondering because I’m not 18, and my parents (paranoid bastards) won’t cosign with me.

If you don’t use the phone a lot IMHO the best deal going is at www.virginmobileusa.com

Almost every major cell service provider offers some sort of prepaid option. You’ll do well to shop around and see who’s offering what in your area. I’ve dealt with Verizon FreeUp prepaid, and it seems to be a pretty good deal.

I think AT&T Free2Go is now the cheapest. Minutes now expire in 90 days, not 45. The package is $100 pllus tax, which includes a $10 card for about 40 minutes call time. There’s also a $40 rebate! Check at the local store or go here: http://www.attwireless.com/personal/prepaid/

That AT&T plan is interesting. I guess they felt the heat from Virgin. In particular, the $100 plan for a year is only $20 more than Virgin for that period and has $0.15 minutes instead of $0.25 minutes. If you look at their old rates they were exorbitant.

Since you already have a T720 that was used on Verizon, I suggest you use Verizon’s FreeUp prepaid service.

To use Virgin or AT&T, you’ll need to buy a new phone: Virgin uses Sprint’s network, and Sprint won’t activate phones that were sold by Verizon; AT&T uses two different technologies (GSM and TDMA), neither of which are compatible with your phone.

Well, I explained my dilemma to my dad (without mentioning the other pay as you go plans) and gave him the impression that I’m stuck with a contract plan (Oops! I would have told him if he’d asked…). However, it should work out this way, too, because we’re going to get the same service so we can have unlimited minutes to talk to each other.
