Cell Phone Question

I realize this may sound like a dumb question but please bear with me, okay?

Does any cell phone manufacturer make a phone that even though it is turned OFF still alerts its owner they have a message (like with an audible tone)?

Can a phone be set that way?

Thanks

Q

Well, if it’s off, it’s off, isn’t it?

It’s easy to set phones to divert all calls to voicemail, so the only things received are text messages and alerts for new voicemail. Is that what you mean?

Sorry if I was unclear, but what I meant was: can a phone, though turned off, emit an audible alert, letting a person know there’s a voice mail?

Someone is trying to convince me this is possible, but after checking with Verizon, they tell me, just as you did, that OFF is OFF.

You can set the phone so the ringer is completely silenced, but the message tones are still audible (similar but different to what GorillaMan said). If you want it to do this, though, it’s gotta be transmitting, or else it won’t know it needs to beep. Gotta be on to transmit.

Is it possible to set a cellphone so that a particular number always goes to voicemail?

No. It can’t.

Off means no connection to the network, hence no signal, hence no knowledge of messages.

As others have said it may be possible to make a phone look and act ‘off’ but still be connected depending on the phone.

I will say that my phone has an alarm and I’m pretty sure that still rings when the phone is off. That could be made to sound like a message tone but it’s just going off at a pre-arranged time.

Generally diversion to VoiceMail doesn’t happen on the phone itself, it happens in the network before the is contacted (for lots of reasons). So it all depends on what your network allows you to set. There are services that provide really complex diversion rules (diversion based on timing, incoming number, even your location) but it depends what your network has to offer.

It might be possible to set on your phone as well, or if you’ve got a modern phone that can run 3rd party software then there’s probably an application that does it.
