Cellphone microwaves and your health

Hi. I’m in one of those jobs where I carry two cellphones. One I could leave behind but I’m away quite a bit and it’s the only way Mrs. Scoundrel has to reach me.

The other is practically grafted on. It’s my dispatch phone and it’s on my flightsuit all the time. Now it’s a big PITA to carry them both in their little holsters on the belt of said flightsuit. Twice I’ve knocked one off while getting into or out of the helicopter.

Am I risking any harm if I carry them in two of my pockets instead? What’s the Straight Dope?

Probably not. Firstly, there heaven’t been any good, reliable studies linking cancers or other health problems to cell phone emissions. Secondly, the phone is only emitting continous RF radiation when you’re talking on it. When it rings, it does emit a short signal burst to tell the calling cell tower that, yes, the phone is on and receiving a signal, but these bursts are very short, so the average power is low. I wouldn’t be too concerned, really.
