celtic cross

I caught the tail end of a radio item about a book which was claiming that the celtic cross actually pre-dates christianity, and that it was actually an instrument used for astronomical measurement, as well as surveying,
The author was being interviewed, and as far as I could gather,he was saying that it was used by the egyptians,as well as the celts. Anybody got any info, as I didn`t get much more than that?

What is the history of the Celtic cross? What does it signify?

Thanks for the link Reeder,
the particular item i heard, was suggesting that the cross was maybe 6-10,000 years old --I didnt catch what the evidence for this was. The drift of it was that the cross can be used as a measuring device to determine angles etc, and calculate mountain heights,as well as solar and lunar movements, I think the book in question is either just published, or is soon to be,but i didnt catch the author or title, and I`m just fishing here to see if anyone knows the book, but also to see what else might turn up
