Censorship in "Lady & The Tramp"

I have purchased a video copy of Disney’s “Lady & The Tramp”. Near the end of the movie (When the Scottie dog and the Bloodhound are chasing through the streets to catch the dog catcher that has Tramp) Scottie tells the Bloodhound that his sense of smell is gone. The bloodhound replies (at least his mouth moves) but there is no audio. Has something been taken out or is this a mistake on my copy?

Rushing to the rescue…Hold on, Drollman, we’re coming!

Actually, I thought that was kind of an interesting question, so I had to drop what I was doing (cruising the boards :rolleyes :), and go get MY copy and fast forward it to the part you’re talking about.

They’re coming out of the house after the people discover that Tramp was actually killing a rat in the baby’s room. Trusty says, “We’ll track him,” and Jock and Trusty set off. Trusty loses the scent, and Jock says sadly, “Let’s face it, man, you’ve lost your sense of smell.”

It’s not generally known, Drollman, but in the original print, immediately after Jock says this, Trusty actually growled, “Sk my big floppy donkey d*ck, you cks**king mrfr,” before he resumes tracking Tramp through the mud. However, before the movie was released, Uncle Walt realized that some people in the Bible Belt might take this line the wrong way, and had it deleted from the sound track, hence the lack of audio in those few frames.

…and if you believe that, Drollman, I’ve got a bridge in Brooklyn that I might be able to get for you at a knockdown price…

No, seriously, D, I went and looked at my tape. What’s happening there is that after Jock says, “Let’s face it, man, you’ve lost your sense of smell,” Trusty gives him, first, an incredulous look, and then gives his jowls a mighty shake, as if to say, “Just watch me!” and continues tracking Tramp through the mud. He doesn’t say anything at all–dramatically speaking, a dignified silence is a better answer to Jock’s skepticism than any protestations of “oh, yes, I can!”

Oooooh, LADY AND THE TRAMP. This was ONE unlucky movie for Unca Walt.

Are the sequences with the two Siamese cats still in the video? I’ve heard that a lot of Asian-Americans were pissed off about the thinly-veiled Yellow Menace to the good Edwardian family Si and Am represented.

There was also a shitstorm between Peggy Lee and the Disney Corporation about royalties…is Peg the Slut Dog’s song left intact?

Uke

Well, my sister has the video, so I can reassure you, Uke, that, yes, the Siamese cats are still there and, yes, Peg’s song is still there (assuming you refer to “He’s a tramp”).

How about the black crows in Dumbo? I’ve been wondering if Dumbo has yet been declared pachyderm non grata for the racist caricatures in that movie.

Yo, Notthemama! I thought the same thing too, but after repeated viewings (kids will watch it over and over and over…) It sure looks there should be a voice track to that segment. It also seems like ALL audio drops out. Yup. The Siamese cats scene is complete. BTW: I also purchased “Dumbo” and the scat-sing black crows still sing “When I See an Elephant Fly” at the end. I’m assuming the racial stereotypes in any cartoon (from Bugs to Disney) were never meant to offend (but what do I know?) With that in mind, is cutting the offending scenes out the answer or is it “revisionist history”? Just because be edit it out, doesn’t mean it never happened. Just a thought…

Drollman, does your copy of Dumbo have the whole song after Dumbo and Timothy wake up in the tree or just the part at the end? Just curious.

Ooh, Ike, now I AM getting interested. Thank you for reminding me of that. My copy is from probably 1986, because they release them to video every 7 years, and I bought it not the last time around, but the time before that.

So now I have to go rent the new release and look to see (a) if they’ve given Peggy Lee a songwriter’s credit, and (b) if they’ve changed the Siamese cats.

Hmmm…

The copyright issues between Disney and Peggy Lee have been resolved, In fact, Disney had to hold up on releasing the video until after the lawsuit was completed.

There are quite a few cuts of racial stereotypes in the short subjects, particularly back in the 1930’s. I list all I’ve been able to unconver on my website.

I agree, I find it very strange to be watching Tom & Jerry and have the blackface gags edited out. I’m not saying they’re funny in today’s context (or that they were funny at the time) but they are of a certain era and serve as a sort of capsule of the climate of society then. Plus it’s jarring when a gag goes unfinished because something had to be edited out. “Hey, what happened with that exploding teakettle?”

“That’s impossible! Cartman doesn’t know a rainforest from a Pop-Tart!”
“Yes I do! Pop-Tarts are frosted!”

Orwell strikes again. We have always been at war with Eastasia…
Winston Smith is alive and well and working for Disney and Warner Brothers…cutting clips that are not acceptable to the current oppressive political climate and sending them to the incinerator never to be seen again.
If you have the uncut version, KEEP IT! Someday these things will have to be restored, when the madness passes…

Well, I sat down with the new copy and the old copy and found them to be just the same. I discovered to my surprise that Peggy Lee has a songwriting credit on the old version anyway, so I guess the issue was over money or something technical.

Be warned–Disney has (not surprisingly) added nine minutes of previews on the front. Like they think we don’t know what other Disney titles are available, or we care what’s coming out next Thanksgiving, or we don’t know they bought ABC (or was it the other way around? Who cares?)

Yeah, My copy of “Dumbo” has (I guess) the entire “When I See an Elephant Fly” song with the scatting & singing crows. (“I’ve seen a peanut stand. I’ve seen a rubber band…etc”)
