I’ve been asked to come up with ideas for a teambuilding for approximately 24 people, somewhere around October. Any cool suggestions? I’ve exhausted all the usuals. We’ve done bowling, water parks, etc. and I’m looking for something new, preferably with actual activities that can be done in teams, rather than just a purely social teambuilding, although I’ll take those suggestions as well.
Guidelines:
Preferably not out in bright sunlight (lots of shade or shelter required if outdoors–I have a staff member with sun sensitivity)
Not terribly expensive per person
Lasts 4-5 hours including driving time from either our Lakeland or Orlando office
Should involve/include food
Shouldn’t require exhaustive physical activity, though some is okay–we’re a bunch of IT geeks from 25-50+ years old
Help?
How about the Aiguille Rock climbing center in Longwood? They offer team building stuff and it’s a lot more interesting than theme parks.
(side note, I’ve never been there but know many people, including my daughter, who have and they all say it’s way fun. I just haven’t made it happen yet)
I don’t think the activity is exhaustive and it can be tailored to the individual.
I was in an exercise once, years ago. Everyone had a canteen, one quart of water. Four hour exercise, then the canteen was refilled if needed, for the afternoon. (Drink limits off at lunch, the weenies!)
Two rules: You can’t drink your own water. You can’t ask for a drink.
Well, some people offered their canteen relentlessly, and ran out really quickly. Some were more quid pro quo, only offering when water was offered to them. Some waited for the importance of their own water to increase, some offered water according to relative perception of importance of the person to which they offered. It made us all think, and in the afternoon session, a lot of us decided that four hours wasn’t long enough to worry about not having a drink.
My friend’s family owns the Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, and I’ve seen this teambuilding type of equipment on their site. It has a big climbing wall thing, a bunch of pedestals where I assume you try to work together to cross them, and some other things. They have a restaurant there too. Kinda far from Lakeland though…well kinda far from everything. I’m sure other resorts around town would have this sort of thing, they can’t be the only one.
You could try canoeing, the Wekiva river is nice. Or Rock Springs, but don’t go on the weekend. You could go up to Blue Springs to see the Manatees or De Leon Springs to eat at the Waffle House but that’s not exactly team building I guess. There’s a lot of nice places around to go hiking, I know the Wekiva area has some, and I’ve been looking into going to the Seminole Ranch Conservation Area.
How about a geocaching exercise? It’s pretty big around these parts. You’d need to round up a few GPS’s, but among geeks, that can’t be too hard.
Lan parties are good. Nothing builds a team like sniping. There is a neato website instructibles.com? that has a ton of projects and stuff geeks would like.
