Now that Ceres is considered a dwarf planet, does it retain its status as 1 Ceres?
Will something happen like the Miss America beauty pageant where the winner is unable to perform the duties of the station and the runner-up accepts the crown meaning Pallas assumes the number 1 becoming 1 Pallas?
One thing that the IAU clearly tries to do is make names stable, so that future discoveries will not change things. So it would have to be a really unforeseeable change to make “1 Ceres” no longer the official name, and I don’t think changing 1 Ceres from an “asteroid” to a “dwarf planet” is a big enough change.
Especially since 2 or 3 of the other asteroids may qualify for dwarf planet status – we don’t seem to know enough about their shapes to be quite sure – and since the dividing line between “dwarf planets” and the rest is pretty fuzzy really.
