Sorry I don’t have access to Facebook from work. I also apoligize for the delay in my response as I only check the Dope from work.
Re: Facebook link:
It doesn’t matter. After getting in a number of fights over his nonsense, Northrup removed his facebook. The url was originally available in the comments on this page, but then someone posted that Donnie had pulled it and later comments (apparently from Donnie) claim that he pulled it because of all the negative comments he was getting. (Donnie does not come off as too literate or well-spoken in his posts or quotes attributed to him.)
Please note that there is a different Donnie Northrup in Kansas, not Canada, who simply shares a name and who should not be confused with or harrassed for having that name.
Since Donnie appears to be simply a knee-jerk jerk, I suspect that anything addressed to him would be a waste of electrons and I would not recommend that anyone address him, but if you are simply overwhelmed by the urge to vent at him, be sure that you are addressing him and not some innocent bystander.
While I think this was presented in a dickish way, there’s a long-standing precedent that people pick charities they can relate to, and I think it’s legitimate for a someone at a school that is seeking to become more diverse to ask “Why is it, year after year, our designated charity is for a disease that affects white people disproportionately?” The suggestion that the student association should alternate between multiple charities seems reasonable, IMO. It’s certainly something that should be open to discussion (which, near as I can tell, is all they agreed to do). Now, if someone were calling to reduce federal funding for CF because it’s a “white man’s disease”, I’d call bullshit. We need funding for all diseases, and it shouldn’t be a competition between them. But the funds raised by a student group are finite, and they are allowed to talk about where they might want to give them.
But Donnie Norththrup himself is obviously a total dick.
It’s not common, but men can and do get breast cancer.
Even if it was 100% white, the logic behind the student council decision is deplorable.
It seems to me that university students are struggling for racial issues on which to be heard and participate in these days.
I’m amused that so much of the backlash is directed at Northrup. The left leaning people anyway. Its embarassing that almost a whole student council voted for this. Lets ignore that and focus on one person, call him a bigot and excise him from the left.
The real issue that I see is “what the hell are they teaching these young people in university these days”. It sure doesn’t seem like critical thinking.
As an undergraduate 30 years ago, and as a member of the Human Relations committee of the Graduate Student Senate years later, I can attest to a long history of dickish behavior in our universities. This is just an example of a long tradition.
We just had a case here at our hospital recently - a man in his late sixties with a large invasive tumor and lymph node metastasis. While it’s uncommon in men, breast cancer often presents in advanced stages and is harder to treat.
Instead of sending nastygrams to Donnie the Dildock, I think it’d be more effective to donate to one of the groups funding research into a cure for cystic fibrosis.
I have not delved too deeply into the mess, (I was curious about the Facebook entries but got there too late to see any), but it seems that Northrup has brought on his own problems. It appeared that the student group was simply looking to broaden their charitable deductions to other groups, reducing their CF contributions from 100% to 25% while including other charities), but that Northrup hijacked the move with his own vitriol. The few quotes I have seen from him make him look a lot like the occasional idiot that wanders through GD making sweeping claims in poorly thought out (or written) English about the evils of “others.”
All that may be true, but it is no surprise that there are idiots in the population. What is a surprise is that he got 16 out of 18 university students to go along with him. This is the next generation of leaders in our country.
Northrup had a stupid idea. He may have hijacked the meeting. But it was all 17 of those students who took action.
Had the council been made up of students that represent the education and intelligence of dopers here, that vote would have been overwhelmingly opposite.
My understanding is that Northrup brought forward the motion to help out other charities. It would have been a good idea if left at that and would have passed without any eyebrows being raised.
I wonder if those who voted for it even considered that part of his statement or if they ignored that part and just agreed to diversify the charitable proceeds.
Regardless, they got a good lesson in politics that they will not soon forget. They failed in making a good change due to their own stupidity.
Good point. I seem to remember they were limited to an up and down (no amendment allowed) vote. Changes my attitude a bit towards the council.
In really large groups, too.
