cha'an buddhism and zen

What are the differences between cha’an buddhism and zen? I understand that the former is the forerunner of the latter, but is the former still around? What readings are in its cannon?

Thanks.

Anybody? Kinda surprised nobody has info on this.

I hope it is ok to “bump” this up the list again.

My understanding, from Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and a few other (similarly non-scholarly) sources, is that ‘cha’an’ and ‘zen’ are simply different ways to pronounce the same word.

Rather, they’re the same word in two languages. Son[sic?] Buddhism is the Korean form, as well. Zen is, as you may know, Japanese, but it was introduced as Cha’an by the Chinese. I’ll give a cite if I need to, but it’s from a book (written by a Cha’an teacher who moved to the States) I recently read.
