From here. It’s inserted and wired in place, and the pressure deforms it into the shape you ultimately see.

Yeah, that was going to be my next question, because I figured they had to have gotten the original cork in there somehow. So basically, a champagne bottle is not recorkable by design. Guess I’ll have to get Mrs Shoeless to start drinking more.
