The problem is that Gould is a recursive redemptionist, and allows analysis to get in the way of his higher thought processes in symbiotic synthesis. If only you could understand how recursive symbiosis creates gravity and elucidates species, you’d see where all this is coming from.
You’ve taken this out of context. Reality sorts behavior and species change suddenly when typical behavior fails at bottlenecks. There is no such thing at fitness causing a gradual change in species.
The more complex the species the more likely it is to bottleneck and the more frequently it does. Gene diversity is created by localized bottlenecks. Since every individual is equally fit this sorting and mutation are the primary cause of Change in Species and these both tend to cause sudden change not a gradual drift. We are reading the “Fossil Record” incorrectly as though it is a sample of life on earth.
We have no categories for the actual causes of change so they are invisible. Just as the fundamental forces share no defined categories so too, consciousness, free will, and reality share no defined categories so our science hasn’t been able to recurse them or perform experiment.
This is the direction science has been going for decades. I’m just trying to make a paint by numbers where we’ll end up but make no mistake; science will have an observer and “objective science” will sound as ridiculous to most scientists as “I think therefore I am” sounds to me.

Thank you. Your suggestion is highly relevant and good advice for most people. However, I have no interest in any opinion whatsoever. I cobble together experiment and anyone’s insights I can find into an existing structure (mental model). I define “evidence” as data that fits existing belief. I do not believe in taxonomies, categories, or inductive logic. You can see how reading existing literature is of highly limited value to me. Indeed, knowing professional opinion can be confusing for me so when I research a new area that is the what I read last. I’ve kept up with experiment and some research in biology over the years but this theory has been under construction for many decades. There are “experiments” such as the creation of upside down flies by means of killing only flies that land on the tops of tables. After a few generations flies will land on the underside of tables and sneak out to eat. This behavior is probably the result of intention of humans or other animals in the past effectively obliterating typical fly behavior creating genes encoding the response into DNA and then that DNA spread through the population causing more variability in behavior and increasing the odds of survival of the bottleneck. No matter what causes the bottleneck variability in behavior improves the odds. Darwin mistakenly believed populations were relatively stable and consciousness could be factored out but these are the two primary factors in change in species so OF COURSE he was wrong. “Fitness” is nothing but a post hoc label, not a mechanism.

No. “chickens” and “eggs” are mere words, mere categories,. There are no eggs and no chickens in the concrete world. Everything is individual so every egg and every chicken is an individual. When they are alive they behave (through intent) and this behavior is sorted by reality into what might live and what must die. A chick that doesn’t peck its way out of the egg in a time determined by that individual dies. A chicken that loses its head (usually) dies. There is no negotiation with reality but every individual uses its consciousness and free will to continue to survive. A rabbit runs from a fox and a fox polishes its hunting skills to survive. Where is this in Darwin’s world? He simply assumed a rabbit is a rabbit is a rabbit but in the real world every rabbit is trying to survive and they learn tricks to do so even if it means kicking a bobcat in the nose. Life will out. Darwin was wrong and fitness ain’t no mechanism to the rabbit that gets caught OR the one that doesn’t.

This would be a better point if we had an empirical record of what happened but we don’t even have second or third hand accounts. Your point is well taken since the Russians have been doing the same thing with silver foxes. They’ve been at it for some time now and the results have been more gradual. This is merely one data point and it is likely related to the nature of foxes and the actual selection process.
