Change.org Has Sold Out

Pretty good for fourth graders! I think at that age I made a potato battery.

The Daily Kos article laid it out fairly clearly. Change.org makes its money from its mailing list, they charge $1.75 a name for their list of subscribers. People subscribed because Change.org was widely perceived as an organization that promoted progressive causes. They did not circulate petitions on behalf of anti-abortionists and corporate interests.

Now they are all of a sudden opening up to all causes, including conservative ones. Of course, they will not be selling mailing lists of progressives to conservative organizations, no, they’ll be developing mailing lists of conservatives through campaigns they will do for conservative causes, and they’ll sell THOSE to conservative organizations.

But the thing is, the money and clout they amassed to make them effective at this came from their progressive clients and subscribers. They are essentially using the money and organization they got by serving progressive causes to fund and enable serving conservative causes.

Why, biting the hand that feeds you is a pretty DAMN apt analogy here.

It’s a sell out, a cheap and cynical grasping for money through betrayal of the progressive movement.

There, that make sense to ya?

Not really, no.

It’s pretty hard to forget things that aren’t true. Unless by “commercial flop” you mean “grossed $350 billion worldwide”, then yes. Oh, and if by “most”, you mean “Lou Dobbs”.

I resent your characterization. My post was brief, snarky, and bereft of references to miraculous cures, angel visitation, or holiday footwear for dying parents.

I’m not a raving progressive, but I subscribe to Change.org emails. I’ve even signed one of their petitions. I kind of pick and choose, but hey, that’s just me.

Example emails:

*Freddie Mac sold us a home that used to be a meth lab – and they didn’t tell us.

*I did not know that Freddie Mac were real estate brokers!

When my sister fled the house from her ex-boyfriend’s beatings, she didn’t even have time to put her shoes on. He sent her to the hospital with a broken nose and ribs.

This one sounds more serious!

Yes, they do.

No, they don’t!

Duck Season!

Quick someone get that petition so we can all sign it so this woman can get her shoes back!

For The Progressives!!!

This is worse than when Dylan went electric.

Actually, I think we can all sympathize with the OP. Something we really liked changes, and then it becomes something we don’t like so much. Bummer. But it just goes to show that the founders are all about making money after all.

If only there was some way a large group of people could let this organization know it doesn’t support a change it wishes to make.

They could put on a show to raise some money!

Maybe if we all [del]sell our email addresses to spammers[/del] sign a petition, they’ll change their minds.

We’re gonna keep on, keep on, keep on, keep on changing all through the night!

In a world where an organization dedicated to change changes…

You really really don’t want to hear what’s happened at Hope.gov

(There’s no Hope.gov site, so it works as a joke 2 ways)

Bitches got a free meth lab. Lucky.

You’re talking about the Republican party aren’t you?

It only scored 55% on Rotten Tomatoes so I’ll give you “critical failure” but with worldwide box office earnings of $335 million I’m going to have to object to the “commercial flop” label.
