Pretty much every comic book hero and villian has died and come back multiple times.
I’ve never been a Soap Opera fan, but I’ve known a number of them, and I can see them doing something like that because they are pretty fanatical about their soaps! LOL

Kirk was missing and presumed dead in the Tholian Web, too, if I recall correctly (until he turned up in Uhura’s quarters - hmm)
I’ve always wondered what the official reaction from Vulcan was when it became known that Kirk hadn’t died after all. Wouldn’t Spock have had to go back and finish the wedding ceremony?
I suppose the story was “Kirk was beaten and thought to be dead, but recovered.” No need for the drugging to come to light. Since Spock rejected T’Pring after the fight ended, the wedding is off regardless of Kirk’s status - it’s just that before the shock of apparently killing Kirk, Spock wasn’t mentally capable of declining

Starfleet (in Kirk’s era) can miss a lot of things if they don’t want to see them.
