Are you disputing that Kirk was based on Hornblower? That’s very well established. Roddenberry’s original pitch described Kirk as “a space-age Horatio Hornblower.” That doesn’t mean that every aspect of their personalities match.

In any case, of course Hornblower was a captain. He rose through the ranks from midshipman to admiral.

I think Buffy Summers would make an excellent companion on Doctor Who. She’d call the Doctor “Giles”, and he’d gently admonish her for stabbing all the aliens.

You’re right, I misspoke; Hornblower did not begin a captain in his series. Another significant difference between Hormblower and Kirk.

Just because one character was based on another does not mean they would have been best friends.
