I stopped watching because of that character - and originally started watching because the actor was so good in Bones that I thought I’d give it a try.
Ziggy in Season 2 of The Wire
Yep, and if Scrappy wasn’t a big enough dump they created Flim-Flam as a big shit-cherry to go on top!
I think Fonzi ruined Happy Days when the show became all about him instead of Richie Cunningham and Chachi was more than annoying.
I’d also agree with the Thomas Covenant nominations, I read the whole series way back when I would read anything fantasy, but when I picked it up again couple of years ago, I couldn’t believe how I got through it before.
Joxer in Xena-Warrior Princess. Barney Fife would have been funnier and more entertaining if he was put in armor instead.
Sorry to zombie-thread this, but I came across this thread and this bit rather intrigued me because there’s a little tiny aspect that I’ve always found interesting.
Francis Spenlow, as presented by David (who, at this stage in his life, can be seen as a rather unreliable narrator, being a romantic and impulsive young man) is a tyrannical father who opposes David’s marriage to Dora on the grounds of social class.
But with the rest of the story in mind (even Dora admits, near the end of her life, that she was “too young” to marry–not just in years but in mentality), suddenly it’s possible to see Francis not as a cruel tyrant standing in the way of young love but as a father who is perfectly aware of his daughter’s limitations and knows that she’s nowhere near ready for the realities of marriage.
He does tell David that he has “plans for Dora’s advancement”, but that could mean that he wants Dora to have a husband who has the money, the social position, AND the maturity to “take care” of her as she needs to be taken care of, and David, at this point in his life, simply isn’t that person. And if your theory on Dora actually being mentally disabled to an extent is true, then he has all the more reason to want to do so–after he and the maiden aunts are gone, who’s going to look after her?
After all, he doesn’t fire David on the spot, he speaks reasonably and calmly to David the next day, and he assures her that he hasn’t been at all harsh with his daughter. Plus, he doesn’t seem to have any personal dislike for David or any poor opinion of his abilities or ethics–he just knows perfectly well that David doesn’t currently have the financial resources to hire servants or such so Dora won’t have to take on these responsibilities, and doesn’t have the emotional resources to really look after Dora as she needs to be looked after.
The thing is, as the story turns out–the tyrannical father was RIGHT. And even Dora, at the last, tells David that “it would have been better if we’d only loved each other as a boy and girl, and forgotten it.”
I’m going to go with a trope rather than a specific character. It’s a crisis/survival situation and you have that guy. World class a-hole and typically big black man (Cube, Saw II, Walking Dead) and people let him do whatever he wants which is take care of himself and screw everyone else. In that sort of situation, it would take about 2 minutes before somebody fragged him for justifiable if pre-emptive self-defense.
The Walking Dead;
LPITA/a.k.a. Judith, a drain on limited resources, does not currently, and will not be able to pull her own weight for at least 5-6 years, cannot be relied upon to not give away their positions to walkers/baddies (less relevant ATM due to the “safety” afforded by Alexandria, but for a nomadic crew, a baby is a major tactical risk, plus, the sound of a screaming brat just goes right up my spine
“Father” Gabriel (The fuckwit), an adult that is more useless than LPITA, actively working against our crew, needs to be Purina Walker Chow ASAP
Farscape;
Stark; the “I’m crazy” schtick can only go on so long before it starts to grate
Jool; having a scream that can literally melt metals gets annoying fast, especially when you use it constantly, combine that with your delusions of grandeur and annoyance with “lower” species, let’s just say I was glad when your character made the decision she did
Sikozu, yes, psycho-sue, your little gravitational parlour trick can be fun, but not your “I’m smarter and better than you all, also, I hate you all” attitude…
Claire from Heroes. Even though after season one everyone started doing stupid things that made no sense her part remained consistent, whining and being upset about everything. For a show that killed off really cool characters at the drop of a hat they had to make the most annoying one unmurderable.
