Characters you loved (past tense)

I’m watching Six Feet Under back from the start, and noticed something puzzling : I remember, way back when, I rooted for Nate. I always rooted for Nate. Oh, and Claire, cause man, was she like The One That Got Away… Aaaaanyway. Point is : to me, David was an annoying little self absorbed fuck. And Brenda ? Brenda was just sooooo cool. All smart and playing games and shit I thought highly attractive at the time.

And now, maybe 4 years later, my tachyon flux has totally reversed polarity. Nate is the selfabsorbed, selfish fuck now. David is a cool cat (but that may be Dexter’s fault). Brenda is an evil, evil witch. Claire’s still high up there though. The One That Got Away is strong in the emotional Force ;).

So, anyway, what about you ? Are there characters you hated at first, but now like more than anyone else on show X ? Characters you used to like or put on pedestals, that just seem trite or despisable now ?

I used to love Batman. Now I loathe him. I expect that before ever JLA meeting, Wonder Woman has to take five mnutes in private with Superman so he can talk her out of killing that poncy bastard.

My love for Willow Rosenberg has also waned. Not my lust, for she is still a hottie, but she’s a hottie not to be trusted.

Claire and occasionally Mom were the only characters on that show who weren’t complete wastes of humanity. Nate started out cool, but by the time he hooked up with Lisa he’d turned into a skidmark in the underwear of humanity.

I can’t think of any characters I loved but now hate, but I used to think Kira Nerys was a harpy when I first watched Deep Space Nine, and then I came to realize over time that she was a very complex and dynamic character. Probably the most fleshed out and real one in the entire Trek franchise, and easily my most favorite out of the six series and eleven movies.

Good drama doesn’t give you characters you can “root” for unequivocally. Everyone’s an asshole to somebody.

This might be a little premature since I’m only halfway through season three on Battlestar Galactica, but right now I’m starting to dislike Starbuck.

I liked her throughout season one and two when she was just crazy and free spirited. But then after she went through her deal on New Caprica she became hateful. So did Tigh, but he was always an SOB.

So far on season three Starbuck has shown no redeeming qualities whatsoever. She has instead went out of her way to make people suffer. Making Gaeta beg. Ripping into Kat when she finds out she was a drug runner. Cheating with Lee, but then refusing to divorce her husband. I mean wow. She’s a good soldier, but a nearly worthless human being. Maybe she changes later, but so far she’s not looking good.

Helo seems to be only person on the show that actually has morals. Everyone else can’t stick to their moral code when the going gets rough. Helo is the only one tough enough to live up to his.

I actually started out hating Brenda on SFU but then came to like her more- especially when Nate turned into a total jerk and screwed the Quaker woman. Yes, Brenda was evil and screwed up, but I thought she was at least trying to become better and she was a good mother to Maya. I did like Nate at first but I really liked David and Claire (who I named Le Petite Kitty Claire after and Breakfast Club’s “It’s a fat girl’s name” Clare) from start to finish.

Honestly, by the last season, the one I loathed with the heat of a thousand suns was Ruth.

I found JD amusing and slightly endearing in the first few seasons of Scrubs; by the end of the show I wanted to slap him into next tuesday.

I gave up watching Life this past season because I no longer liked Reese. She went from being legitimately hard-assed and formidable to being…well, tarted up. She has an entirely inappropriate relationship with her boss, she’s given painfully stupid dialogue, her wardrobe is made tighter and more revealing…ugh. That’s not the character I loved in season one.
