Charging a laptop battery without the laptop

Hello everyone,

Hopefully someone can help me out. I have an HP laptop that is about five years old. While not the latest and greatest I really love this computer. Unfortunately the receptacle on the laptop where you plug in the charger has developed a crack where it meets the circuit board. This seems to be a very common problem and can be fixed, but cost more thanthe computer is worth.

I want to keep this laptop, but cannot use it because it won’t charge or run in AC power because of the problem. However, it will operate perfectly if the battery is charged. The problem is, I can’t charge the battery in the computer. Is there any device available (reasonably priced, say $50 or so) that will allow me to charge the battery outside of the laptop? Hopefully there is and then I can avoid the expense of having to buy a new laptop. Thanks!

No idea.

Try to find a docking station for it. At five years old, you should be able to get one cheap.

I went back and googled “external charger for HP laptop battery” and found several results in the $60-100 range. I’ve never tried them so no idea how well they might work, or how badly they might not work.

This is more of a General Question than a Great Debate.

Off to a better home.

Sorry, I thought I had posted in GQ, not GD.

Get an electronics repair workship to repair the circuit board.
HP are just telling you the price to replace the circuit board.

If you aren’t afraid to take your computer apart, and you know how to solder, this problem could be fixed in half an hour with a $10 part.

Get someone more experienced to help you, or if you’re feeling adventurous, figure it out yourself. Your laptop will be useless without it, so it’s worth a try.

I would second this. Although taking a laptop apart can be a somewhat daunting task (components are packed **really **tight in them these days), you may only need to open the case to get to the broken plug and it *would *be pretty easy to fix for anyone who can soldier.

You to get over it and get a new notebook

Have you used the battery recently? I’ll be surprised if a 5 year old battery lasts >50% of its initial run time.
